Best Bunk Bed Stores

Where can you find the best bunk beds? First, you'll need to have an idea of what style of bed is right for the space you have. For example, if you've got kids that are sharing a small bedroom, you'll probably want a traditional style where one frame is stacked right on top of the other - some styles even have a two sets of bunk beds side-by-side with a set of stairs linking them.

Bunk beds are also very popular in vacation rental homes. Kids love the novelty of sleeping in them - and deciding who gets to sleep in the top bunk - while rental owners appreciate being able to accommodate more guests.

Target: the little-bit-of-everything store we all know and love. You probably won't see any set up in-store, but bunk beds and loft beds are easily found in their online shop. (And, shopping online might save you from the phenomenon we're all familiar with: going in for Just One Thing and coming out with a whole cartful of stuff you didn't know you needed but had to have, especially those clearance items on the endcaps!)

First, all of the lofts and bunks they offer come with the same perks as any other Target order: 5% off if you use your REDcard, free shipping (since they're all at least $35), and their generous return policy: 90 days from the date it ships. You can return it to any Target store or ship it back to the designated address for returns of online orders. Their policy also says that some large items like furniture might be eligible for pickup by Target's return carrier; you'll need to call their toll-free number and provide your order information to find out for sure.

Typically, the return policy applies to unopened items, and that's a safe bet for bunk beds: but knowing how customer-centric their representatives are, we think it's possible that even something as big as a loft or bunk bed could be returned in-store even if it had been opened. Of course, if you've damaged it when setting it up, that probably wouldn't apply.

The Target website is vey easy to navigate. They display large pictures of each bunk bed they offer, and give you a different view of the bunk bed if you hover over the picture. On the left is a large variety of search options which let you narrow down your search, including:

  • Color
  • Price
  • Bed Size
  • Decor Style
  • Shipping & Pickup
  • Finish
  • Brand
  • Guest Rating
  • Deals
  • FPO/APO
  • Character
  • Theme
  • Gender

As you find models that you like, you'll find much more detailed information on the individual product pages. The main page shows a basic thumbnail image of just the bunk bed or loft bed but hovering over that image gives you an idea of what it would look like in a bedroom: bedding, accessories, and so on.

You won't find the flowery descriptions of the bunk beds, like you might at a store that specializes in furniture. You will find detailed information about dimensions, materials, and assembly, and the Q&A section is especially helpful for anything that might not be answered elsewhere.

We also found a cool feature called GiftNow. Let's say you want to send a bunk bed across the country to your grandkids, but you're not sure what color or what features they'd need. When you use the GiftNow feature, the recipient gets an email notifying them of the gift - and they also have the opportunity to make any adjustments to color, size and style before it ships. That email notification can be scheduled for any future date within the next 12 months, if you like to shop early and know that your gift-giving is taken care of.

If you want an idea of how your loft or bunk bed has worked out for other Target customers, scroll down the page on any individual bunk bed. We especially liked being able to see photos of how the beds looked in real bedrooms, not just the staged photos from the manufacturers. Target customers are known for being brutally honest in their reviews - and we appreciate that Target is known for publishing them all, even if they're not favorable.

Target measures up easily with other retailers of bunk beds. The only drawback we found is that there are no options for white glove delivery: in other words, having someone that brings the boxes into your home and assembles the furniture where you want it. But, buying your bunk or loft bed through Target might save you enough money that you can hire someone to do it for you.

Target offers a pleasant shopping experience, customer-friendly perks, and a good variety of basic loft and bunk beds. We recommend that you browse their site to see if there's a bunk bed that meets your needs.

What can't you buy at Walmart? Well, when shopping their online site, you'll have a hard time finding something that's not available there - and bunk beds are no exception. With just over 80 styles including lofts and under-bed futons, Walmart may surprise you.

Their navigation is actually better than some of their competitors, even those that specialize in furniture. You can use the left side of the page to narrow down what they sell, according to these criteria:

  • Height
  • Finish
  • Brand
  • Width
  • Price
  • Length
  • Gender
  • Material
  • Maximum User Weight
  • Headboard Style
  • Bed Style
  • Customer Rating
  • Lifestage
  • Bed Size
  • Special Offers
  • Shipping & Pickup: 2-day shipping, Ship to home, Free In-Store Pickup + Discount, and Free Pickup

When you choose a model that interests you, you can see more details. We recommend that you scroll down to see dimensions and other specifications, as well as customer reviews. Your shipping options will be displayed right underneath the price; we were impressed that even on a large item like a bunk bed, we could get delivery to our home for less than $20, or pick up in-store for free. (Of course, picking it up ourselves would also mean we'd need the car/truck space to get it home.)

Many of the bunk beds listed by Walmart specifically mention that they're sold and shipped by a third-party provider - many of whom you'll find in this review. You'll want to check and see if, at the time of your purchase, the bunk bed you want is a better deal if you buy directly from that retailer instead of going through Walmart. Also, since at least one of those third-party stores didn't rank well in our review, it's worth considering whether or not you want to buy from them, even through the Walmart site.

That could be important when it comes to returns. Unless it is specifically fulfilled by Walmart, you'll be at the mercy of the third-party seller's terms and conditions. We had a hard time tracking down Walmart's actual return policy on their site, but historically they've allowed returns in-store and by mail within 90 days of purchase.

While Walmart may not be a glamorous place to buy a bunk bed, their selection is good and their prices are usually lower than the competition. Plus, with so many brick-and-mortar locations for easy pickup and returns on online orders, this store could be perfect for those who need a bed sooner rather than later.

Continued from above

Most bunk beds offer a range of sizes, from the classic twin-over-twin all the way up to a full-over-full size. Having a larger bottom bed can be especially helpful when Mom or Dad needs to spend some time helping reassure children in the middle of the night! And, if you anticipate that your kids may not always want to share the bunk bed, many styles give you the option to disconnect the top from the bottom and use each as a stand-alone bed.

Finally, the most high-end bunk beds incorporate novelty themes to create the bedroom of a child's dreams, from princess castles to treetop hideaways.

On the other hand, if you're equipping a college dorm room and want a bed that frees up floor space, a loft bed is a great fit. Many loft beds have built-in desks and shelves underneath, and some come with a futon for extra seating when friends come to hang out.

Buying a bunk bed or loft bed online can make your shopping extremely easy. Instead of driving from one store to another, you can see hundreds - even thousands - of brands, frame materials, configurations and options with just a few clicks of the mouse. The best online retailers of bunk beds give you all the information you need to get the right fit: from safety tips (e.g. top bunks aren't recommended for children under the age of 6), to measurement helps, as well as extras like guardrails and canopies. Better yet, many bunk beds and loft beds come with free shipping: no need to try and squeeze bulky furniture boxes into your trunk or strap them to your car roof!

When deciding where to buy your bunk bed, you might initially feel overwhelmed by the wide variety of options out there. Here are several factors to consider that can guide your shopping decisions:

  • Selection. How many bunk beds and/or loft beds does the store offer? Can you find a range of choices in terms of brands, styles, and price points?
  • Return Policy. If you don't like the bunk bed once it's been delivered, can you return it and get a refund? Will you have to cover the return shipping costs? Is there a restocking fee?
  • Online Shopping Experience. How well-organized is the site? Can you find what you're looking for quickly, or do you have to spend time hunting for what you want?
  • Reputation. What do other customers say about the retailer? Have they been satisfied with the quality of the bunk beds they've ordered? Is the customer service department responsive when problems arise? Is the store in good standing with the Better Business Bureau?

TopConsumerReviews.com has reviewed and ranked the best bunk bed stores available today. We hope this information helps you find the right bunk bed or loft bed for your needs!
