Dylan's Candy Bar

DYLAN'S CANDY BAR

Cost:

Starting at $31.59 per month

Created by Dylan Lauren in 2001, Dylan's Candy Bar is well-known in New York as offering a Willy Wonka-like experience with more than 7,000 confections in its flagship retail location. Dylan's aims to deliver an equally delightful experience with their Candy Club.

Membership Overview:

  • Candy Club Selection: 2 options, mixed candies or just chocolates
  • Duration: 3, 6, or 12 months
  • Frequency: Monthly
  • Shipping: Included in the cost

You have two options for your subscription: The Signature box that has items like lollipops, gummies, and chocolates, and the chocolates-only box with candy bars, bark, and other chocolatey treats. The first shipment of both boxes comes with a cute mini-bin that's meant to be refilled with some of the treats you'll get in every package.

Subscription options include 3, 6, and 12-month plans. The Signature selection starts at $109 for three months, and the Chocolate box is slightly higher at $119 for three months. You'll pay less for longer subscriptions; for example, the year-long membership to the Signature collection works out to be just under $32/month.

Keep an eye out for extra savings, too. When we visited the site, we got a pop-up offering a 20% discount and free shipping on orders of $75+ if we entered our email address. Also, on the customer service page, we got another pop-up offering a 15% discount on our first order.

If your Candy Club subscription is a gift, you'll be able to enter a gift message on the first page of the order process. You can also download a PDF if you'd like to let someone know right away.

We did notice in the lengthy Terms and Conditions that subscriptions cannot be modified or cancelled once processed and no refunds will be given. That surprised us, since we saw that they do offer refunds for purchases of other items. Dylan's does seem to leave the door open to asking for a refund or replacement if any of your candy comes in less-than-perfect condition, but be aware that you may be out of luck if you want to cancel your subscription for some reason.

We found several customers whose chocolates arrived melted, and they said that Dylan's was very good about sending replacements - unfortunately, those replacements weren't packaged any differently and usually wound up arriving melted as well.

Another complaint we heard is that the value of the candy received isn't great. For example, one box included a gourmet candy bar, a package of chocolate-covered Swedish fish, and four novelty-shaped truffles. That works out to be approximately $10 per item - which may be worth it for a particularly tasty treat, but it's still on the expensive side compared with other Candy Club retailers.

Overall, Dylan's Candy Club offers the bright colors and delicious sweets that people have come to know and love from their retail locations, making it a terrific idea for people who want the Dylan's experience without visiting an actual brick-and-mortar store. In the future, we'd like to see them include a little more in each box, to make their pricing more competitive with the other Candy Club subscriptions in our review.

Cost:

Starting at $9.60 per month

Bocandy specializes in international treats. You may already be familiar with some of the brands they include in their monthly candy box: Haribo, Pocky, Kinder, and Marabou, for example.

Membership Overview:

  • Candy Club Selection: 4 different box options, focusing on international treats
  • Duration: 3, 6, 12 months or month-to-month
  • Frequency: Monthly
  • Shipping: $4.99 per shipment

There are four candy box options to choose from at Bocandy:

  • Bocandy Big Box: a selection of snacks and candies from around the world, including the US
  • International Candy Taste Box: candies from around the world
  • Asian Snack Box: focuses on Japanese, Thai, Indonesian and Korean treats
  • Premium Box: "the best of the best" and the largest box Bocandy offers, it also includes a craft beverage each month

Here's where we got confused, however. When we clicked on the "Subscribe" button for the International Candy Taste Box, we were taken to a page that showed four different options instead: Bocandy Big Snack Box, Asian Candy, Bocandy Starter Box, and Craft Beef Jerky. As you can see, these don't line up with the boxes they're advertising on the main page.

We're not sure how active the Bocandy business actually is. When we visited the site for the first time, there was an offer to enter our email to win a free year of candy - but the date for the drawing was nearly 10 months earlier, making it look like the page hadn't been updated for a very long time. Hoping to get a different impression by visiting Bocandy's social media pages, we tried clicking on the links at the bottom of the site for their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram - which all resulted in "Not Found" errors. Even their blog was completely non-existent. Not the sweet experience we were expecting!

Making matters worse, we found in Bocandy's FAQ that they offer absolutely no satisfaction guarantee. Even if you cancel your subscription, you get zero money back for any unused portion of your membership. Talk about "buyer beware"!

We found very few customers with anything to say about Bocandy, but the few we did find said that they had issues - with incorrect charges, with contacting customer service, and with the boxes themselves. One reviewer said that everything in their box tasted stale, and that they could have gotten the individual items for much less money at their local store.

In short, Bocandy doesn't inspire much confidence. We strongly recommend that you try one of the higher-ranked Candy Clubs in our review for your delivery of monthly treats.

Continued from above

Gummies, hard candies, chocolates and international snacks are just a few of the candies that your gift recipient might see in a candy box, bringing them joy over the course of a few months or a year, depending on the length of the subscription you choose. That's a much sweeter gift than flowers that will die in a week or an engraved pen that will eventually get lost in a desk drawer.

Of course, not all candy clubs are created equal. You'll want to carefully consider the features of each club as you decide which one is right for you. A few of the most important aspects of candy club memberships include the following:

  • Reputation. Does the company have lots of reviews, with most or all of them being positive? Do they offer a satisfaction guarantee?
  • Selection. What does your candy box include? Does it have the variety of candies you prefer? Are there several options to choose from?
  • Price. How much will your subscription cost? Are there discounts for paying in advance or for subscribing for more months? Does shipping cost extra or is it included?
  • Flexibility. Are there different membership lengths? Can you put your shipments on hold if you or your recipient will be away from home?
