CANVAS ON DEMAND

For more than 15 years, Canvas On Demand has been creating a wide variety of print gifts: more than 3 million images since 2002.

You'll find an almost overwhelming variety of canvas print options with this company - and an ordering process that feels a little bit backwards. First, you'll need to have an idea if you want Premium or Traditional Canvas. Premium comes in the following sizes and includes an extended 2-year warranty:

  • 8x10
  • 12x12
  • 11x14
  • 16x16
  • 16x20
  • 20x20
  • 20x24
  • 20x30
  • 24x36
  • 30x30
  • 30x40
  • 32x48

You have even more options with Traditional, available in both 0.75" and 1.5" wraps, Their most popular sizes, which ship in 2-3 business days, are 11x14, 16x20, 20x24, 24x36, and 30x40. But, if you have a custom size, you can select any dimensions in whole-inch measurements from 8x8 up to a maximum of 55x100; these custom orders ship in 3-5 business days.

Canvas On Demand's list prices are very high. We went through the ordering process and found that an 8x8, Traditional Canvas print had a "regular" price of $57. Fortunately, there were discounts already in place, and our price dropped to a much more agreeable $28.

We opted to upload a photo from our computer, though we appreciated having the ability to choose an image from our Facebook account as well. (Adding Instagram capabilities might be a good move for selling to the younger set, too.) Unlike our previous experience with Canvas On Demand, this time we were able to easily preview our selected photo, see what it would look like to apply a black-and-white or sepia effect, and see how it would look with a color blur, image, black, or white edge.

The next screen told us that we could add a Professional Review for $9.95, which would include personalized suggestions and a satisfaction guarantee that gives a reprint at no additional cost if the final product is less-than-perfect. Then, we had the choice of adding Retouching services for an extra $19.95; this includes removing redeye/date stamps, teeth whitening/removing facial blemishes, sharpening/enhancing the image, and so on.

When we got to the order summary page, we weren't thrilled that our shipping costs were $14.90 on a canvas print that cost $28. Canvas On Demand doesn't have a standard list of shipping fees; instead, you have to add items to your shopping cart to get an "estimated shipping rate". We'd definitely prefer to know the cost upfront, like many of their competitors provide.

Despite all of these seemingly negative points, why does Canvas On Demand still earn a 3.5-star rating? That's an easy answer: customer satisfaction. We found thousands of reviews from extremely happy shoppers, with almost all of them giving this business a perfect rating in terms of quality, customer service, and timely delivery. This reputation is further strengthened by an "A+" rating with the Better Business Bureau.

While you probably will pay more for it, your canvas print from Canvas on Demand is likely to exceed your expectations and be a beautiful addition to your home or office decor.

CANVAS DISCOUNT

Canvas Discount is part of the Bestcanvas family, with headquarters in Miami. They offer several types of photo products, including photo gifts, home decor, and canvas prints.

When you click on the Create Canvas button, it will automatically open your downloads folder - no option to choose images from Facebook, Instagram, or other sources. Available canvas sizes ranged from 8x8 up to 40x60, with pricing from $9 to $160. As with most sites, these prices reflected a "discount" that's more likely to be their everyday pricing.

With an 8x8 print, we were given the option of adding an easel back for $9. We could only get one frame thickness, 0.75", though larger print sizes included a deeper thickness if desired. Other options included edge design (black, white, folded, stretched, or mirrored), framing, and black-and-white effects. We could also add a text box, if desired.

We were surprised that our options ended there. Canvas Discount doesn't offer any kind of image retouching, and their add-ons were very limited compared with other canvas print companies. Shipping options were similarly sparse: $9.90 for express delivery. Nothing more, nothing less. Given that's an amazing price for fast shipping, we weren't bothered by not having more options. Although there was also no production/delivery timeframe mentioned on the order page, we did find that orders are guaranteed ready to ship within 24 hours, which is equally impressive. And, if your order happens to be more than $70, your shipping is free.

Do they deliver on their promises? Canvas Discount's reputation is definitely a mixed bag. On the one hand, we found quite a few repeat customers who've been pleased with their canvas prints over months or even years, with no problems related to quality, customer service, or delivery. On the other hand, Canvas Discount's parent company, Bestcanvas, Inc., had an unimpressive rating of "C-" with the Better Business Bureau at the time of our review. The BBB said that the Bestcanvas site made many claims of being the best rated canvas shop, the world market leader in production, and so forth; we found similar claims on this website and saw for ourselves that the places they claimed to have top rankings were not accurate.

One positive is that we did see responses from Canvas Discount representatives on every site where we found complaints, which shows that they are making the effort to address customer concerns.

We appreciate that they offer a 110% price guarantee, and although it's not prominently featured on the site, they do seem to have a satisfaction guarantee as well. According to the return and refund policy, you can contact them within 30 days if you're unhappy for any reason. But, they don't specify that they promise you a refund no matter what. Instead, it says "we will confirm your complaint and then advise on how to proceed". This isn't the most reassuring customer satisfaction policy we've ever seen.

And, if you want to reach a representative, you're limited to a 5-hour window, Monday through Friday, from 11a to 4p EST. This includes their live chat as well as their toll-free number.

The shopping experience with this business might be summarized best by one word: "inconsistent". When Canvas Discount gets it right, their finished products are amazing, but unfortunately, they don't seem to maintain that in a way that customers can trust no matter what their canvas print order entails.

We want to like Canvas Discount for their fast production time, low prices, and sometimes-amazing canvas prints. But, with less-than-consistent results, a low rating with the BBB, and a difficult-to-reach customer service department, we have our concerns about how our order would be handled and if we'd get an end product that left us happy.

Best Canvas Prints

To help you find the Best Canvas Prints, TopConsumerReviews.com provides you with an in-depth comparison of Canvas On Demand and Canvas Discount.

Who has the best Canvas Prints? Gone are the days where the best way to display a treasured photograph was in a traditional frame. Most home decoration TV shows, magazines, and websites feature canvas prints as the most modern-yet-elegant format for showing off your children, favorite scenic shots from a vacation, or even spotlighting your four-legged family members.

Using a canvas print takes your images from a flat, two-dimensional aspect and pops them out as a 3-D work of art. Whether you're buying a canvas print for yourself or as a gift to commemorate a special occasion, ordering it online can save you time and money while still resulting in the pixel-perfect quality you'd expect if you entrusted the project to a local photographer and print shop.

When working with an online supplier of canvas prints, you'll find that the best websites will walk you through everything you need to know - from how to select an ideal image, the best canvas size for your selected photograph, which framing to use, and which touch-up services like fixing color balance or adding text elements might give it a special touch.

How can you tell which canvas print company you should use for your next project? Services vary widely, so as you decide which one would meet your needs, keep these factors in mind:

  • Pricing. How much will you pay for the print size you want? Does the company offer any discounts, free or reduced-cost shipping, or other perks that can make it even more affordable? How much will you pay for upgrades like contrast balancing or other features?
  • Reputation. What do previous customers have to say about the quality of the canvas prints they purchased? Does the company have a rating with the BBB?
  • Simplicity. Does the company's website make it as frustration-free as possible to upload your photos and get your canvas print ordered quickly? Is it easy to make changes, add customization, or fix flaws in the photo?

TopConsumerReviews.com has reviewed and ranked the best Canvas Print stores available today. We hope this information helps you design the right canvas print for your home, office, or gift-giving needs!

Types of Pictures That Make Good Canvas Prints

We've all had a "Kodak" moment. Maybe it was the first time you saw a baby fawn taking its first steps in a field. Maybe it was that fantastic waterfall you encountered at the end of a hike in the wilderness. Or maybe it was just your grandma, sitting on her rocking chair on the front porch of her hundred-year-old home. Whatever the moment, we've all had one where we just knew it would make a memorable photo.

Photos that can only be classified as "Kodak" moments definitely are the kinds that make excellent canvas art.

But what, exactly, is canvas art?

Canvas art is created through a specialized printer which requires special eight to 12 color inkjet printers containing UV-resistant ink. You want to use UV-resistant ink because if the canvas will be hung on a wall, it most likely will at some point be exposed to sunlight, which can cause it to fade. UV-resistant ink helps to slow the fading process. The printer is designed to accommodate canvas, which is heavier than most of the kinds of paper we use in our home and office printers.

A high-resolution photo or digital image is then taken, scanned into a computer, and printed onto the canvas with the special printer.

Once you understand the process, it is much easier to choose photos or digital images which would lend themselves to the creation of a good canvas piece.

The first step in choosing a picture that would make a good canvas print is to make sure the image being used is of a high resolution. Most new cameras are capable of 8 to 12 megapixel images, with more expensive digital SLR cameras able to produce even higher resolutions. The general rule of thumb is if the image isn't at least 350 dpi (dots per inch), it will not reproduce well onto canvas. If you are unsure whether your photo or digital image is of good enough quality for printing onto canvas, consider consulting a professional photographer or canvas art business before placing an order. They should be able to review the image or print photo and tell you if it will reproduce well.

If the quality of the photo is acceptable, you also may want to ask the printing company if they are able to edit or "brush up" the photo for you. Issues like red eye, smears and even dust on the lens of the camera can transfer to your canvas art. These are all things that with the right photo-editing equipment - such as Photoshop - can be altered to create a better-looking image.

Among some of the images which have found their way onto canvas include:

  • Family portraits
  • Portraits of pets
  • Skyline photos, particularly at sunset or sunrise
  • Landscape photos
  • Waterfalls, lakes or the ocean
  • Wildlife

The list of what can be transferred to canvas is endless and truly depends on the taste of the individual who is ordering the piece.
