Beekman 1802

BEEKMAN 1802 Visit Site

Cost:

$48 per month

Beekman 1802 was created in 2008 on a 200-year-old farm in upstate New York. Founders Josh and Brent work in collaboration with local artisans, craftspeople, and farmers, helping them grow their businesses and producing goods seasonally.

If you love artisanal-quality goat cheese, Beekman 1802 is the Cheese Club for you. Every cheese comes from Farmer John's goats, and varieties include Kaastavond ("Christmas Eve Cheese"), Chevre, Blak, and Ghoast.

Membership Overview:

  • Cheese Selection: Goat cheese in assorted varieties
  • Duration: Quarterly
  • Frequency: January, April, July, October
  • Shipping: Included in the cost

When we visited the site, we were given a pop-up offer of a 15% discount on our first order if we subscribed to their email newsletter. Unfortunately, the fine print said that the discount wasn't applicable to Cheese Club subscriptions.

That discount would have been very helpful: Beekman 1802 is one of the most expensive Cheese Clubs on the market. Their website left us a little confused by their pricing options: a 3-month ongoing membership (recurring billing until you cancel it) for $48 per shipment, or a 12-month non-renewing subscription for $190. But, that 12-month subscription is still only shipped quarterly, so we were left a little confused. Both plans work out to be roughly $48 per shipment of cheese, with no additional shipping costs. Apparently, the only difference is whether you want to have an ongoing membership that renews until you cancel or whether you want to give a total of four shipments to yourself or someone else.

What if you don't wind up liking your goat cheese from Beekman 1802? Their return policy states that food items are not returnable, which is reasonable. They also state that they want their "Neighbors" - how they refer to their customers - to be "entirely thrilled" with anything they receive from Beekman 1802, and that they will do their best to take care of any issues that arise. That's a little vague, but their overall reputation is sound enough that it can be taken at face value.

We love the attention to quality and local production offered by Beekman 1802 and think that, for those who love goat cheese, their Cheese Club will be a winner. On the other hand, most people looking for a membership for themselves or as a gift are likely looking for more variety, wider shipping options, and lower prices.

However, not all cheese clubs are alike and it's important to understand the policies before you sign up. Important aspects of a cheese club membership to be aware of are:

  • Flexibility. Will you be able to select the length of membership and frequency that fits your needs and budget?
  • Cost. What can you expect to pay for the cheese club that best meets your needs? Can you make monthly payments or is a flat fee required?
  • Satisfaction Policy. If you aren't happy with the timeliness, quality or taste are you able to stop the membership and receive any portion of the cost back?
