Originally opened in 1940, Murray's Cheese is a beloved tradition in Greenwich Village, with their own cheese-aging caves on Long Island. You may have even seen some of their varieties in a local Kroger's grocery store or featured in one of the 600+ restaurants and hotels that use the gourmet cheeses in their dining choices.
We love the amount of detail provided about the three cheeses that come with each delivery. For example, one month's varieties included "Truffle Tremor" goat cheese from California, "Marieke Gouda" from Wisconsin, and "Prairie Breeze" cheddar from Iowa. Each one is described in mouth-watering detail and comes with a drink pairing suggestion for even more enjoyment.
Murray's is the only retailer in our review of Cheese Clubs that cuts each cheese selection to order. Because cheese flavors can change from month to month, Murray's cheesemongers sample the cheeses in their storage caves and select the three most flavorful varieties for that month's delivery. Each wedge is wrapped in special paper that allows the cheese to keep maturing even during the delivery process and stops it from drying out. All orders are shipped in lined thermal boxes with gel packs, keeping the cheese cool to cold while en route. And, if you're giving the Cheese Club subscription as a gift, you can have the deliveries shipped in a Murray's gift crate for an extra $15.
You will want to keep an eye on the calendar: every delivery comes on the second Thursday of the month. If, for some reason, that date isn't going to work - you'll be out of town, or your gift recipient will be on vacation - you'll need to get in touch with Murray's customer service department at least 24 hours in advance to delay the shipment.
Looking for a little extra savings? Watch out for pop-up offers: when we visited the Murray's site, we were given a 10% discount for signing up for their email newsletter. However, be aware that the discount will only apply to a regular order, not for the Cheese Club membership.
Customers have plenty of good things to say about Murray's cheese. From celebrity fans like Oprah, who put the Cheese Club on her Must-Haves list, to the everyday clients who left glowing reviews on the Murray's website, people love the unique varieties and tantalizing flavors in each shipment.
Murray's knows cheese. And if you're looking to get to know cheese better than ever, you won't be disappointed by their Cheese Club membership.
iGourmet offers a lower priced international cheese of the month club along with several other food and beverage gifts. The website lacks some professionalism and we struggled at first to find the cheese clubs among the food gifts available. We liked that iGourmet provides a newsletter to guide you through the cheese selections of the month but had concerns about the flexibility of the membership to meet most budget needs.
Each month you can anticipate 3 half pound selections of cheese delivered to the doorstep. Cheese originate from around the globe and may focus on a particular region of a country or allow for a comparison of different American cheese makers.
iGourmet primarily focuses on providing gourmet food and not club memberships. As such the website lacks important information regarding the packaging and expectations of sending a cheese club membership to family, friend or business relationship. This is also evident in the lack of plan flexibility in frequency, duration and payment plans. The only benefit to purchasing an iGourmet cheese club membership is the reduced cost but otherwise iGourmet lacks some necessary bells and whistles to win our approval.
To help you find the Best Cheese Clubs, TopConsumerReviews.com provides you with an in-depth comparison of Murray's and iGourmet.
