Harry & David

HARRY & DAVID Visit Site

$33.33 per month

For more than 80 years, Harry & David has been well-known for their gourmet gifts. Whether you're looking for treat-filled gift baskets, fresh fruit, or chocolates, their reputation as a high-quality retailer makes them a solid choice for your gift-giving needs. And, their relationship with the 1-800-Flowers group of brands makes the website a one-stop-shop.

Harry & David also has a simple yet stellar guarantee: if you or your recipient aren't delighted with any of your chocolate club shipments, Harry & David will make it right with a refund or replacement.

So, what do you get with a Chocolate Club membership at Harry & David? That depends on the length of your subscription and the months you choose. For example, if you start in December and go through February, your shipments will include Holiday Truffles, Signature Chocolate Truffles, and Milk Chocolate Gift Box. You can see exactly which chocolates are sent for each month, which may be helpful if you know that the recipient doesn't like nuts or caramels, for example.

Membership Overview:

  • Chocolate Selection: Harry & David has specific types of chocolate for each month. Customers choose the starting month.
  • Duration: 3, 6, or 12 months
  • Frequency: Monthly
  • Shipping: $6.99 per delivery for standard shipping of 4-7 business days

Harry & David also offers handy upgrades, for that extra-special touch. Look below the dropdown boxes for the starting month and club length to see if there are any upgrades offered. At the time of our review, shoppers could upgrade the first month's shipment to the Classic Tower of Chocolates which included hard candies and popcorn as well as chocolate treats, for an extra $10.

If your Chocolate Club membership is a gift, you'll be able to specify the information after you've entered your shipping and payment details. And, it may be a little hard to find, but Harry & David's "e-Nouncement" service is an added touch, especially if you think your gift might not be delivered in time or if you want your recipient to know in advance to be expecting a surprise in the mail. The service is free, and it allows you to send a personal webcam message, personalized photo greeting, or even an award certificate. You'll find this feature most quickly if you look under the Customer Service links at the bottom of the site.

Unfortunately, Harry & David doesn't provide very many details as to what to expect with the Chocolate Club package. Is there a helpful newsletter describing the kinds of chocolates in each month's delivery? Does a gift message get delivered with each shipment? We have no way of knowing from the description of their Chocolate Club - unlike most of their competitors, who at a minimum have a newsletter or other informational guide to what recipients get.

On a positive note, Harry & David has an excellent reputation for quality, especially as shown by the 100% guarantee we mentioned earlier.

In short, if you'd like to know exactly what you or your gift recipient will be getting each month - or you need to avoid certain types of chocolate - and you want a company with a decades-long track record of excellent quality and service, Harry & David's Chocolate Club is a good choice.

From $20 to $35 a month (plus shipping fees in warmer months)

Chococurb is a monthly premium chocolate subscription geared to those who love high-end chocolate. Inside each box you will find an assortment of delicious chocolate items. Every box comes with new items from small, local businesses to large established, national brands.

The website offers many options – you can purchase an individual box, gift a box, purchase a subscription and gift a subscription. There are gluten-free options, vegan, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, white chocolate, etc. Once you have decided what type of box/subscription you are interested in you can get started on personalizing. You are taken through a short questionnaire to see what kind of chocolate connoisseur you are and what kind of chocolate preferences you have. Now here is the annoying part – to move any further you have to enter all of your personal information to create an account to see pricing.

If you are moving forward with a subscription you have the option of purchasing their Chococurb mini or their Chococurb classic. The Chococurb mini includes 3 gourmet chocolate bars every month starting at $20/month. The Chococurb classic includes 5-7 gourmet chocolate bars every month starting at $35/month. You can purchase a 3, 6 or 12 month subscription. The longer you go – the cheaper the boxes. Boxes ship out on the 14th of every month.

Membership Overview:

  • Chocolate Selection: Chococurb personalizes your box according to your preferences
  • Duration: 3, 6, or 12 months
  • Frequency: Monthly
  • Shipping: Steep warm weather shipping fees, free in cooler months. Refer to their website chart. Warmer months they use Styrofoam containers and ice packs.

Chococurb advertises that you can purchase any of the chocolate bars that you love on their website but we couldn’t locate an option to purchase single bars. Also, it appears that Chococurb may be in the process of expanding their offerings and the company website is just not fully developed as of the date of review. We researched online to find reviews for Chococurb but only found people that were given their boxes for free. Their reviews were positive and highlighted that the chocolates provided were delicious.

Chococurb offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you are not happy with the products they provide an email address to contact. Their only means of communication are via email and twitter which may be concerning for some that prefer to speak to a human to discuss delivery and product issues.

We loved the idea of premium chocolates sourced from a variety of businesses. However, we would like to see the website further developed and an option to speak to customer service when issues arise.

From $21.25 to $24.99 per month (plus $9.99 shipping per delivery)

Headquartered in Newport Beach, California, Chocolate features boutique-quality chocolates from small businesses in the US and Canada - because this retailer believes that the best chocolates are made in small batches, not in factories.

Chocolate offers several types of Chocolate Clubs, which is a nice option if you have a gift recipient who would really love to get only truffles each month or if you need to send chocolates that are entirely vegan.

Membership Overview:

  • Chocolate Selection: Choose from Truffles, Milk Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, Vegan, or Chocolate Lovers Collections
  • Duration: 1, 3, 6, or 12 months
  • Frequency: Monthly
  • Shipping: Not included ($9.99 per shipment)

How much chocolate is included in each monthly delivery? Unfortunately, Chocolate doesn't make that clear. We saw that in the examples of previous shipments, it included a 2-lb. chocolate bar, a 24-piece truffle assortment, and a 4-bar assortment of chocolate - but there's no way to determine if those represented three separate months of deliveries.

You can choose a month-to-month plan or a pre-paid subscription of 3, 6, or 12 months at a time. You'll pay a little more per month if you don't prepay. Shipping is $9.99 per delivery and is not included in the listed club prices.

How about Chocolate's reputation? At the time of our review, the retailer had a rating of B+ with the Better Business Bureau and was not accredited. On the BBB site, we found several complaints from customers about issues with orders being billed but not shipped, or having difficulties reaching Chocolate's customer service department to track down orders.

We wound up with similar questions: on the Chocolate site, the only contact information given is an email address and online contact form, no phone number. Their Chocolate Club is administered through the third-party site Cratejoy, and at the bottom of that page there's a phone number. Unfortunately, that number leads to a generic "Customer Support" line, not a dedicated customer service department for Chocolate or Cratejoy. In fact, looking up the number online, it matches the number given for a variety of businesses, including a fashion company and a cell phone buy-back service!

Yes, it's true that in Chocolate's Terms and Conditions, they offer a 10-day return policy and a guarantee of timely delivery - but good luck getting a hold of them to request any kind of refund if you need it.

So, while we love the variety of Chocolate Clubs you can choose from, Chocolate doesn't do much to inspire confidence in their reliability or attention to customer service. You may be happier with one of the more established Chocolate Club services.
