Handy

BBB Rating:

F

Handy provides access to light duty contractors such as furniture assembly, picture hanging, assistance moving, drain cleaning, and painting but, their emphasis appears to be with cleaning services. This company is newer to the market as they only opened doors in 2012 and have not yet expanded to many areas across the U.S. Handy is a free service for those searching for help and they do offer a 100% money back guarantee. In our research we found some happy customers but many unhappy customers as well. Handy currently holds an F rating with the Better Business Bureau.

Handy markets "trusted" individuals for light duty and home cleaning services. Each contractor must go through an extensive screening process that includes a background check, reference check and an in-person interview.

As mentioned previously, Handy has had some success with customer satisfaction but also a concerning number of unhappy customers. That is represented in their BBB rating as well as customer reviews complaining of very long wait times via phone and email assistance, contractors not showing up or not doing a thorough job, and more. However, we did notice that cleaning service were as low as $25 per hour and that seemed very affordable.

To book a cleaning or handyman service at Handy you simply type in your zip code, details of the job and when you'd like the service completed. The website then brings up the price for the service and asks for your specific contact details and credit card information. Payment must be made via a credit card and Handy will automatically charge you for the cost on the date of appointment.

Handy offers only a small selection of contractors to assist with light duty household chores and cleaning. The website also doesn't allow the customer to choose the contractor or view prior customer reviews. Due to the poor customer service ratings and lack of expansive services across the U.S., Handy didn't fare well in our analysis.

iHome Experts

iHOME EXPERTS Visit Site

BBB Rating:

None

iHome Experts is a Texas based company in business since 2011. iHome Experts currently has no available Better Business Bureau rating.

We found the iHome Experts website to be confusing and as we looked closer we found several issues. iHome Experts states they only offer siding, flooring, countertops, kitchen remodeling, cabinets, window, heating and air conditioning. The process of requesting a contractor for a home repair or improvement request involves a phone call to iHome Experts' toll free number.

This company also states they offer free in-home design consultations, but we're not sure what they would be designing outside of a remodel effort. Another confusing aspect of iHome Experts is that when you call their number the recorded message is for home foreclosures. We were never able to get a hold of an actual customer service representative so we're not confident why an in-home design consultant would want to talk to us about foreclosures - it was a little fishy.

The lack of BBB rating, the short business tenure, and the bad phone number were red flags in our book. If you need a contractor for a home repair or improvement, we recommend you choose a higher ranked company to effectively meet your needs.

Continued from above

Today, many people use home repair and improvement referral companies to minimize the stress of finding a reliable contractor. These referral services can be a great way for you to feel confident in your search for a professional contractor.

However, not all contractor referral companies are the same. Before you jump online to find your next contractor, consider the following:

  • Database. How large is the database of contractors? Does the service offer contractors across the nation or is it limited to only specific areas?
  • Cost. Who pays for the referral service - the homeowner or the contractor? Are contractor quotes and bids free of charge?
  • History. Does the company have a long, reliable history of supplying quality contractors? What's the current Better Business Bureau rating of that company?
