Who's the best credit repair company? Most Americans know that a good credit score and credit history are important. That one number, your credit score, can determine your ability to get a loan for school or for a car, be approved as a tenant, or to qualify for a credit card.

Unfortunately, when your credit history is less than fantastic - because of making payments after the due date, having too many credit inquiries, or even having mistaken information associated with your identity - you'll have fewer options when you need to make a major purchase. You may even have to pay higher than average rates on your car insurance or your mortgage.

Cost:

$99.95/month

Credit Repair looks like an incredible service for fixing your credit history. For $99.95/month, this provider will pull your credit report and help you identify which items you want to change or challenge - building a plan with you instead of creating an arbitrary strategy without your input.

From there, Credit Repair's experts work with credit companies to implement your plan, and then they verify with the credit bureaus to make sure that those changes actually take effect. You can track your progress through your personal online dashboard and a mobile app, where you'll also see your score tracker and analysis of the changes to your credit profile.

You'll also find great resources in the Education section of the site. Want to know how bad credit affects you, or how to get your free credit report? You'll find that information here, along with an up-to-date blog, tools to help you in your financial planning, and much more.

Unfortunately, Credit Repair has lost some credibility within the industry. Why? According to the Better Business Bureau, the company was asked to prove their claims that the average customer sees progress every month while using their services - even seeing improvements in the neighborhood of 7% of questionable credit report negatives being taken off their credit reports every 30 days. As of the date of our review, the BBB was still reporting that they had not received proof of those advertising claims. Those claims are still prominently featured on the Credit Repair website.

While we did find quite a few customer reviews that said their credit scores improved reliably over time using the Credit Repair service, it's hard to recommend a business that has an "F" grade at the BBB because they didn't take the time to prove that their advertised claims were legitimate. If those facts are accurate, it should be a simple process to report them and clear up the concern at the BBB. If that happens in the future, Credit Repair will probably move up in the rankings among the services we reviewed; until then, we suggest you look at some of the higher-rated companies for your credit history improvement plan.

Cost:

$29/month

No setup fees

eCreditAttorney's pricing is simple: $29 per month. For that fee, your credit repair service should include addressing late payments, collections, bankruptcies, tax liens, repossessions, judgments, foreclosures, charge-offs, garnishment, even identity theft/fraud. You're expected to provide a current copy of your most recent, updated credit report; it's not included with the fees that you pay. Side note: the link provided by eCreditAttorney for their "preferred credit score provider" took us to an invalid page - not very encouraging.

This provider offers a "performance-based refund policy": after you've been a client in good standing for 6 months, you can request a full evaluation of any progress they've made in repairing your credit. For every improvement or deletion they've made, eCreditAttorney will count it as a $95 value. If the total of monthly fees you've paid exceeds the value of $95 per improved/deleted item, you'll get a refund of the difference. Do the math, because that's not a fantastic deal: at $29/month, eCreditAttorney would only have to make two improvements or deletions over the course of 6 months to demonstrate adequate "performance".

eCreditAttorney has a rock-bottom rating with the Better Business Bureau: F. According to the BBB, the provider has failed to respond to numerous customer complaints in the past three years. Customers describe getting no response from anyone at the company, even after multiple emails and phone calls, and worse - no progress on improving their credit reports after months of paying fees. Why would anyone entrust their credit repair to a company that can't even do a minimal job of keeping their customers - and the BBB - satisfied? You'll have a more positive experience with another service.

Using a reputable credit repair company puts you back in control of your financial reputation. These services work on your behalf to reduce or eliminate any negative factors in your credit history, working directly with collection agencies, creditors, and even with the three primary credit bureaus. With the help of a credit repair company, you can improve your score and even put a stop to negative information being reported on your accounts. Most services take several months before you see measurable results on your credit report, so adjust your expectations accordingly.

With so many services advertised in the media and online, how can you tell if a credit repair company is reputable and effective? As you compare the various providers, here are several criteria to keep in mind:

  • Reputation. What do past and current users of the credit repair service have to say about the experience? Is the company accredited and/or rated by the Better Business Bureau?
  • Cost. What will you pay to fix your credit history? Should you expect a one-time fee or a monthly payment structure? How do the costs compare with other providers'?
  • Guarantee. Does the credit repair service guarantee that they will improve your credit score and/or history? Can you get a refund if you are unhappy with their service for any reason?
