WOLFERMAN'S

Wolferman's original slogan, more than 100 years ago, was "Good Things to Eat". Begun in 1888 in Kansas City, Missouri, this retailer has decades of experience as a top-notch bakery. It's no surprise, then, that their Dessert Clubs focus on baked goods like cakes, scones, and sweet breads.

You've got more options with this retailer than with most of their competitors: they offer not one but two Dessert Clubs, Bakery Favorites and Premier Bakery. The Bakery Favorites Club ranges from $79.99 to $274.99, with subscription options of 3, 6, and 12 months. What sorts of Desserts can you expect? Baklava, Cinnamon Rolls, and Tearoom Scones are just a few of the selections sent out previously.

This dessert club allows you to choose the month you'd like the club to start: either the current month or one of the next two months to come. We love that Wolferman's publishes their product schedule in advance, so that customers can decide which months might best fit their sweet tooth and start their club subscription accordingly. You'll want to select the 12-month option in the drop-down box in order to see the year's desserts, and then choose the 3- or 6-month membership that has what you like, if you're not opting for the full year plan.

Membership Overview:

  • Dessert Selection: Preselected by Wolferman's on a set schedule
  • Duration: 3, 6, 12 months
  • Frequency: Monthly
  • Shipping: $6.99 per shipment

Another plus for Wolferman's Dessert Club is that every purchase is backed by a straightforward guarantee: you'll love it or you'll get a replacement or refund, whichever you prefer. Wolferman's is part of a larger group of brands - including Harry & David, The Popcorn Factory, and 1-800-Flowers - which all offer that level of customer service. Given that there were no reviews on the Wolferman's site about their Dessert Club, it's good to know that they've got the backing of such a reputable company affiliation.

The only drawbacks we can find are the slight lack of variety (if you want a dessert that isn't a baked good, you won't find it here) and the high shipping costs compared with other Dessert Clubs. The higher-ranked businesses include delivery in their subscription price, but Wolferman's charges $6.99 per delivery. Over the course of a 12-month membership, that can adds up quickly.

Given the high quality of desserts and the reasonable cost of the Dessert Club, Wolferman's may wind up being your top pick for your favorite fan of baked goods.

HARRY & DAVID

Harry & David is one of the most popular names in gift-giving. Although some of their most popular items are available in retail stores - their Moose Munch comes to mind - their best selection is available online, including seasonal fruits, gift towers and baskets, and gourmet foods.

Their Dessert of the Month Club includes options of 3, 6, or 12-month deliveries, with selections ranging from premium popcorn and cookies to cheesecake and chocolate-covered strawberries. At the time of our review, prices were $109.99 for a 3-month membership, $209.99 for six months, and $379.99 for a full year's subscription.

Membership Overview:

  • Dessert Selection: Harry & David preselects the desserts for each shipment
  • Duration: 3, 6, or 12 months
  • Frequency: Monthly
  • Shipping: $6.99 per shipment

Harry & David does allow you to choose which month you'd like to start shipment of your Dessert of the Month Club from the current month or the next two calendar months. However, your options only include 3, 6, or 12 months, with no option for quarterly deliveries. In other words, if you choose a 3-month membership starting in March, the desserts will come in March, April and May.

One plus is that Harry & David publishes all of their desserts for the calendar year, letting you see well in advance if there's a different time of year you'd rather start your subscription. For example, if their January dessert is a HoneyBell Cheesecake and you're not a fan, you may want to wait until February's selection of Sea Salt Caramels to begin your Dessert Club membership.

We weren't terribly impressed with Harry & David's pricing - average to expensive compared with other competitors - or with the fact that the Dessert Club is not eligible for free shipping within the Celebrations Passport program. This program allows shoppers to pay an annual fee of less than $30 and get free shipping across a whole group of brands that includes 1-800-Flowers, The Popcorn Factory, and Simply Chocolate. Instead, Dessert Club subscribers should expect to pay $6.99 per delivery, even if they purchase the Passport for other purchases. On the other hand, when we visited the site, there was an offer to save 20% off the total subscription cost of any length of membership, which would almost exactly cover those shipping fees.

We do like that Harry & David - and every other brand in the group - offers "the strongest guarantee in the business", where customers can expect a replacement or refund if anything isn't an absolute hit. This is a good thing, especially given that the only review on the Dessert of the Month Club is very negative: the customer said that at least four of the desserts were a disappointment, with a soggy pie, bitter-tasting blondies and brownies, and a dry chocolate cake.

So, should you choose Harry & David's Dessert of the Month Club for your gift-giving needs? They do allow you to include a personalized gift message at no extra charge, or you can select a personalized greeting card for an additional $3.99. And, you may like being able to see which desserts are scheduled each month, to tailor your purchase to your recipient's tastes. Just be aware that at least one customer was less-than-thrilled with the overall quality of the food they received, and be prepared to request a refund or replacement if needed.

Dessert Clubs

To help you find the Best Dessert Clubs, TopConsumerReviews.com provides you with an in-depth comparison of Wolferman's and Harry & David.

Finding a new, exciting gift year after year for a friend, family member or business contact can be a challenge. A great new idea that has been gaining in popularity the last few years is a dessert club membership.

In a dessert club, delicious desserts are sent monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly, depending on the flexibility of the club and the customer's preference. Dessert selections are either predetermined by the company, selected by the gift recipient, or can arrive as a complete surprise. For dessert lovers, especially those hard to buy for, receiving a new dessert every few weeks can be a delightful experience.

However, not all dessert clubs are alike and it's important to understand the policies before you sign up. Important aspects of a dessert club membership to be aware of are:

  • Flexibility. Will you be able to select the length of dessert club membership and frequency of delivery that fits your budget? Will you be able to select the dessert choices or are they selected by the company?
  • Cost. What can you expect to pay for the dessert club that best meets your needs? Can you make monthly payments or do you need to pay a single, flat rate fee?
  • Satisfaction Policy. If you aren't happy with the timeliness, quality or taste of the delivered desserts are you able to stop the membership and receive any portion of the cost back?

TopConsumerReviews.com has reviewed and ranked the best Dessert Clubs available today. We hope this information helps you find the right dessert club to meet your needs!
