23andMe offers the most comprehensive DNA testing available for those who want to better understand their unique characteristics. Especially with the increasing popularity of genealogy research, there are a number of companies offering testing to help people track their ancestry and connect with relatives around the world, and 23andMe's services excel in that regard.
With just a saliva sample, 23andMe creates more than 60 reports that are delivered by email in 6-8 weeks. These reports include:
23andMe also provides users with the opportunity to connect with DNA relatives, allowing them to better fill in their family tree. It is important to note that 23andMe has strong privacy protection in place: no individual data is shared without the person's explicit consent, and user data is only shared for research purposes if they opt in.
The Ancestry service costs only $99, while the Health and Ancestry service costs $199. Shipping starts at $9.95 for one kit. Users can receive a 10% discount on orders of two or more kits, with shipping increasing accordingly.
In virtually every circumstance - from family history research to testing for genetic conditions - 23andMe stands out as an excellent choice for DNA testing. They earn our highest rating.
Live Well Testing offers a broad variety of medical testing options. You'll find drug tests, DNA testing, wellness testing, and much more - including detailed descriptions with each test and a very professional shopping experience. Live Well Testing currently holds a Better Business Bureau rating of A+ and does an excellent job of describing the purpose, testing process, and what to expect with each test.
The DNA testing options at Test Country are among the most diverse we've seen. We were excited to see that they offer both non-court and court admissible testing for their clients.
A straightforward paternity test at Live Well Testing starts at $199. Samples may be taken from blood, mouth swab, hair, and other bodily excretions. DNA test results appear in the form of a notarized report and are available 3 to 5 days after the sample is received. Results may be faxed to those looking for immediate information.
Another customer friendly aspect at Live Well Testing is their price match guarantee. If you find a better price for DNA testing from a list of stores they provide, Live Well Testing will match their price. Affordable shipping is another benefit at Live Well Testing, which starts at $4.95.
We were impressed with the DNA testing options available with Live Well Testing. Along with customer friendly policies, a strong reputation, fair pricing, and a quality shopping experience, Live Well Testing is a great place for your DNA testing needs.
Medimpex has been in business since 1999 and was one of the first companies to produce and distribute a wide variety of tests including DNA, forensic, alcohol, and drug testing direct to the consumer at affordable prices.
The Medimpex website is busy and a little overwhelming at first but pretty straightforward once you find the forensic test kits. Along with each test you'll find an easy to understand description of what the test entails and the purpose. A standard paternity test at Medimpex is affordably priced at $179.00.
First class mail delivery is free at Medimpex and several options for expedited shipping are available. Test results are provided in approximately one week and are available via phone with a follow-up hard copy report.
Medimpex does a decent job of offering affordable, straightforward DNA testing for the purposes of identifying parents. Despite a less professional website we appreciated Medimpex's reputation and fair pricing. If you are in need of affordable paternity testing, Medimpex is worth looking into.
American Screening Corporation, or ASC, is a Louisiana based company that's been in business since 2002. Their focus is providing affordable, high quality medical supplies direct to the consumer. That also includes at home testing for drugs and DNA.
The ASC website is less user friendly than those companies ranked higher. Finding the DNA testing was quick but deciphering the test type and purpose was more of a challenge.
The tests range in price from $180 to $540 with additional costs associated with rushing the results. Identifying the parents of a child starts at $180 and is middle of the road in price across the companies reviewed.
ASC provides test results via the phone in 2 to 3 days after receiving the swab sample. For those wanting testing completed for the purpose of identifying their remains at a later date, ASC does offer 16 to 23 marker testing as well as sample storage for safekeeping.
ASC offers a nice selection of DNA testing but misses the mark with poor descriptions, sample reports and final a call-in process for results. If you're looking for a more customer friendly and professional DNA testing experience we recommend you choose a higher ranked company.
With so many people interested in their family history, or genealogy, DNA testing to determine one's genetic heritage is becoming more popular than ever. FamilyTreeDNA provides the most in-depth DNA tests available for those looking to trace their ancestral roots in a scientific manner, which is probably why they were selected by National Geographic as the testing partner for their Genographic Project.
FamilyTreeDNA's tests fall into three main categories:
FamilyFinder is the most widely purchased DNA test at FamilyTreeDNA, especially by those who want a first look at their overall ancestry - what percentage of their ancestors came from Asia compared to Europe, for example. The cost is $99, which is very competitive with similar tests done by other companies in our review.
Within both the yDNA and mtDNA, there are several levels of testing, depending on how deeply the customer wants to have their genetic makeup analyzed. For example, the yDNA test that examines 37 genetic markers costs $169, while the test that covers 111 markers sells for $359. All of the yDNA and mtDNA tests allow users to connect with others that have similar genetic histories as well as with group projects and experts in their specific lineages.
And, for those who want a full package, the Comprehensive Genome package includes FamilyFinder, the yDNA test that covers 67 markers, as well as the full mtDNA test. However, the steep price of $566 is likely to deter all but the most dedicated genealogy buffs.
Overall, FamilyTreeDNA is an excellent - albeit costly - resource for those who want to examine their family history at a cellular level. It is worth noting, though, that for anyone looking for DNA testing with other purposes in mind - paternity testing, determining if an individual is a carrier for an inherited condition, and so on-FamilyTreeDNA will probably not meet their needs as well as some of the other products in our review.
With recent advancements in scientific testing, it's becoming more commonplace for people to request DNA information. Why would you want to see your DNA? DNA testing is used today for a number of reasons including identifying human traits, infidelity testing, locating relatives, early detection of disease, and establishing paternity.
Several online companies exist today that have significantly reduced the cost of DNA testing and made the process very easy. For just a small fee, you can check the paternity of a child, look for the probability of life threatening diseases, find long lost relatives, and much more.
However, not all companies that offer DNA testing provide the same service or charge the same fees. Before you order a DNA testing kit yourself, you should consider the following important factors:
