Pamper Your Pooch With a New Dog Bed Today! Where does your dog sleep? If you said, "in my bed", you're not alone: studies show that up to half of all dog owners allow Fido the privilege of bunking in with them at night. However, letting your four-legged friend share your sleeping space may not be the best idea.

Sleep experts cite numerous examples of how co-sleeping with a pet can decrease the quality of your rest. When you're ready for Rover to have his own sleeping arrangements, you'll need to choose a Dog Bed. Dog Beds come in almost as many varieties - and price points - as you'd find when shopping for a person.

Over 1,000 items

Dog is one of a group of businesses offering a myriad of supplies for pets and livestock. When it comes to Dog Beds, you'll find more than a thousand options from which to choose, ranging in price from less than $10 for a basic style to almost $400 for an orthopedic option.

The easiest way to sort through the possibilities is by using the left-hand options under "Browse By" on the site. There, your choices include the following:

  • Related Categories: Bolster Beds, Cooling Beds, Furniture-Style Dog Beds, and so on
  • Featured Products: Clearance, Free Shipping, Made in the USA, etc.
  • Pet Size
  • Dog Bed Features: Antibacterial, Chew Proof, Eco-friendly, and more
  • Dog Bed Shape
  • Price
  • Color
  • Brand

Because Dog offers more than 1,000 items in the Dog Bed category, you'll definitely want to focus in on what you're looking for: we were overwhelmed by all of the possibilities, and we also found many items that didn't really fit the category (such as Pet Steps for allowing Rover to get up into a human bed, and Cat Beds!).

We did like how easy it was to see details at a glance on the results page. Shoppers can tell whether or not an item is in stock, if it's made in the US, and the average customer review score (if available).

Dog does allow you to request a price match, either prior to your order or up to 14 days after your purchase. You may find additional offers that will save you money. For instance, when we visited the site, we found a banner ad on the top of the page for a 15% discount on any order.

Dog's shipping and return policies are average. Shipping costs depend on the weight of your order; some items are listed as shipping for free, but there was no information on the site that explained which items qualified (for example, minimum order amount, item price, and so on). We were disappointed to see that we would pay $10+ for shipping a Dog Bed that only cost $9. Returns may be made within 30 days of delivery as long as the Dog Bed is in unused condition and in its original packaging; you will have to pay the costs of return shipping, and you may be charged a 10% restocking fee.

Dog is also a mixed bag when it comes to reputation. On the positive side, their parent company has an A+ grade with the Better Business Bureau as an accredited company, and their responses to customer complaints are appropriate. On the other hand, there are numerous complaints about wrong/defective items, and many customers seem to have gotten less-than-satisfactory responses from Dog's customer service department prior to filing their complaint with the BBB.

So, will shopping at Dog have you wagging your tail or hiding in the corner? When it comes to Dog Beds, the answer is likely "it depends". You'll likely love their wide selection of products, but on the lower end of the price range you may have hefty shipping costs.

Selection:

5+ items

Shipping:

Free on orders over $74.95

For more than 20 years, Ruffwear has been dedicated to creating gear for the canine companions of outdoor adventurers. This is plainly evident in their selection of five Dog Beds, all designed for explorers of the four-legged variety:

  • Highlands Pad, $29.95 - a portable bed/mat
  • Highlands Bed, $59.95 - backpacking bed
  • Mt. Bachelor Pad Bed, $69.95 - portable bed
  • Highlands Sleeping Bag, $99.95 - sleeping bag, as the name indicates
  • Urban Sprawl Bed, $149.95 - "everyday base camp"

Like many sites, Ruffwear offers a pop-up discount if you sign up for their newsletter. However, unlike their competitors, Ruffwear's offer is a little on the skimpy side: free shipping only on your first order. Give that some retailers of Dog Beds offer no-cost shipping on all orders, or at least on orders of at least $49, we weren't that impressed. Ruffwear's standard free shipping offer requires an order of at least $74.95, so if you buy one of the lower-priced beds, you may want to add a few more items to your purchase.

Ruffwear does enjoy a solid reputation within its niche of products for adventurous pets; they get high praise for quality items that really do help people explore more comfortably and easily with their four-legged companions. We found many reviews from happy customers.

On the other hand, when it comes to Dog Beds, their selection is extremely limited specifically because of Ruffwear's focus on the outdoor market. For shoppers who are looking for that kind of Dog Bed, Ruffwear is a great choice. However, because the majority of customers are probably looking for a much wider variety of products to choose from, we feel that other retailers in our review will probably appeal to more shoppers.

In short, Ruffwear is great at what they do, but may not be the preferred choice of the average dog owner.

Continued from above

These beds range from simple mats to protect flooring and offer your pet some separation from a cold floor to luxury mattresses that would rival the most high-tech mattress designed for human beings.

One of the first things to consider when shopping for Dog Beds is your pet's needs. Dogs with heavy coats may need cooler arrangements, so a mat may be ideal. As your dog ages, the need for cushioning increases especially if he suffers from arthritis or other painful ailments related to age or sickness.

You'll also need to keep in mind your overall home decor. Are you trying to match a particular color scheme or style, incorporating your Dog Bed seamlessly into the way you've furnished and decorated your home? The sky's the limit on the higher end of the spectrum, provided you've got the budget to match.

Finally, whichever Dog Bed you choose, you'll want to know exactly how to keep it clean. Smaller options will probably fit in a front-loading washing machine, and most Dog Beds of all sizes come with some kind of washable cover that you can easily launder at home - though larger models may need to be washed in a higher-capacity machine at a laundromat.

As you decide which retailer to use for your Dog Bed purchase, there are several factors that may influence your choice. Some of those include the following:

  • Product Availability: Does the store have a wide variety of in-stock Dog Beds to choose from?
  • Price: Does the retailer tend to have prices that are competitive? Are there any incentives that sweeten the deal, such as free shipping or a rewards program for frequent purchases?
  • Reputation: How well does the merchant take care of its customers? Do they offer a solid return policy and/or satisfaction guarantee? What do other shoppers have to say about their experiences with the company?

TopConsumerReviews.com has reviewed and ranked the Best Dog Bed stores available today. We hope these reviews help you choose the right Dog Bed to keep your four-legged family member comfy and cozy at bedtime - or naptime - for years to come!
