TopConsumerReviews.com Best-In-Class Blue Ribbon Award If you're looking for the lowest possible prices, reasonable shipping costs, and a wide variety of dog foods to choose from, Petco should be your first stop. With 35+ brands - including all of the standard brand names as well as a number of specialty brands - you're sure to find what you need, from basic kibble to special diet formulas.

We were happy to see that Petco's regular prices are the same as or better than their competition, and the site was easy to navigate as we looked for the dog food we needed. You can easily search by typing the name of the food into the search box, or use the options on the left-hand side of the page. There, you can sort the available products by the following characteristics:

  • Category: Dry, Wet, Natural, Grain-Free, High Protein, Weight Management, Freeze Dried and Dehydrated, Frozen and Raw, Puppy, Senior, and Veterinary Diet
  • Price
  • Brand: more than 30 to choose from
  • Average customer rating
  • Primary flavor: from Bacon to Wild Game and many more
  • Lifestage
  • Special needs
  • Dog breed

If you need any help with your dog food purchase, there's a helpful Live Chat feature on the Petco website; it popped up for us when we visited the site, but you can also access it using the blue box on the right-hand side of the screen.

Petco has one of the best return policies of all of the Dog Food retailers we surveyed: if you're not completely satisfied with your purchase, you can return it to a brick-and-mortar Petco store or via mail to a Petco warehouse within 60 days. So, if you try that fancy new kibble for Spot and it turns out he's allergic, you can return the opened bag with no problem. Better yet, after the 60-day period, you can still return the product; rather than a refund, you'll get a merchandise credit or an exchange.

Shipping costs are also very reasonable at Petco: free shipping on orders of $49+, and a flat rate depending on item weight for smaller orders. For example, a 6-lb. bag of kibble was listed as having a shipping cost of $5.99. However, if you know that you need your dog food on a fairly regular basis, it's worth it to sign up for the Repeat Delivery program, where shipping is always free regardless of the total price of your order. And, at the time of our review, there was a promotion at the top of the Petco page advertising a discount of 20% off the first order with the Repeat Delivery program.

Want to save even more money? Sign up for Petco's free Pals Rewards program, which earns you $5 in rewards for every $100 that you spend. You'll also get an introductory savings book, bonus offers for earning more points, and personalized discounts. And, if you take the extra step of completing your pet's profile, he or she will get a free birthday treat!

With an easy-to-use website, everyday low prices, and customer-friendly policies like a rewards program and generous return period, Petco is the obvious choice when it comes to buying Dog Food online. We're confident that you'll have a pleasant shopping experience - and your dog will thank you for it! Petco earns our highest rating.

10-12

The people behind Whole Life Pets consider themselves pet lovers, tree huggers, and health freaks. Their website fits the bill exactly with the look and layout. They cater to cats, dogs and birds with food, treats, vitamins, cleaning supplies and more. Whole Life Pets originally started as a small retail shop and has expanded to the internet.

Whole Life Pets provides 10-12 brands of dog food to choose from that have no by-products, artificial ingredients, or chemicals. They also pursue product manufacturers that utilize environmentally friendly production and packaging processes. The brands they offer are generally not wallet friendly.

Upon shopping Whole Life Pets we were frustrated at times with managing the website. We found cat food in our dog food results and felt the effort was unprofessional at times. On the upside, Whole Life Pets does offer a nice autoship program with a corresponding 10% discount. Should you not be happy with your purchase, you may return unopened and unused items within 30 days of receipt for a full refund minus shipping and taxes.

Whole Life Pets failed to wow us with their unorganized website and search functionality. While some may find their selection meets their needs we couldn't find any great reasons to shop from Whole Life Pets. Their smaller, high cost list of dog food brands left us wanting much more.

Continued from above

A number of online dog food stores exist today to meet the needs of dog owners. However, not all dog food stores are the same. Before shopping for your next bag of dog food, consider the following:

  • Selection. Does the dog food store provide a nice selection of dog food brands?
  • Ease of Use. Is the dog food store's website easy to navigate? Can you find the dog food you're looking for without wasting a lot of time or energy?
  • Cost. How do similar dog food brands compare in price across competitors?

TopConsumerReviews.com has reviewed and ranked the best Dog Food stores available today. We hope these reviews help you find the right dog food for your lovable pet!
