Brands:

50+

People love their dogs, and the food their dogs eat is important for increasing longevity, improving coat shine, helping the dog's digestive system, and a lot of other health factors too numerous to list. PetSmart has a plethora of choices for the most budget-conscious or choosiest pet owner. They list 1,500 different items of dog food and dietary supplements.

Prices range from a very reasonable $5 or less up to $125 for elite brands preferred by dog breeders and dog show enthusiasts. It is easy to find a product that will meet your dog's need, and your budget, by selecting the appropriate checkboxes down the left-hand side of the dog food category page. Here is a list of all the options available to refine the search for the perfect dog food.

  • Food Type: Canned, Dry, Food Toppers, Fresh, Frozen, Milk Replacers, and Veterinary Diets
  • Brand: 50+ brands
  • Price: Ranging from $5 up to $125.
  • Availability: In Store vs Online
  • Ways to Shop: Clearance, Featured, Halloween, Holiday, New, Sale, and Web Only
  • Product Rating: 1 to 4+
  • Lifestage: Puppy, Adult, and Senior
  • Flavor: 11 different flavors
  • Nutritional Options: Gluten Free, Grain Free, Limited Ingredient, Natural, Non-GMO, Organic, and Raw
  • Health Considerations: 36 health factors
  • Kibble Size: Large Breed, Medium Breed, and Small Breed

Customer support, help with your order, and returns are a little less obvious than with other sites we reviewed that had automatic popups and clear labels. On PetSmart you need to click the help menu item and there isn't a live chat option available there - just a phone number and a contact button leading to an online form. Despite the frequently asked questions menu on the left-hand side of the help page, we would have appreciated a live chat feature for in-the-moment questions that can often arise with a purchase of this nature.

To return a dog food purchase online and get a refund on the purchase price (less shipping or other charges), you simply ship it back to PetSmart in its original packaging. To return dog food to the store, bring it in its original packaging along with a packing slip, shipping confirmation email, and the credit card used to purchase it. Receipts are only valid for 60 days from the date of purchase. If your receipt is older than 60 days, PetSmart will accept a valid ID and will return the most recent sale amount or exchange it for a different product.

Shipping is free on orders over $49 (prior to taxes and after discounts) up to a maximum of $75. For dog food, free shipping is not available for canned, fresh, or frozen foods. You can also choose to sign up for PetSmart's Auto Ship so you can have dog food delivered to you at your preferred interval. With Auto Ship you'll also save 20% on your first order and 5% on all recurring orders.

With such a huge variety of dog food brands, types, and flavors, it's a sure bet that you'll find exactly the food your dog needs or prefers. The savings of Auto Ship is pretty great and the shipping is reasonable. PetSmart is a great place to shop online for your dog food needs.

Nom Nom Now

Brands:

Their own

Created by Dr. Justin Shmalberg, a board-certified specialist with the American College of Veterinary Nutrition, NomNomNow offers a "care-grade" approach to Dog Food. Similar to meal delivery kits you've already seen for people, this service takes fresh ingredients and makes your pet's meals to order, based on their age, weight, activity level, and any health problems. The Dog Food comes perfectly portioned in individual bags that can be stored in the refrigerator or freezer until feeding time.

Because NomNomNow is so confident that your pet will not only love their fresh Dog Food but also experience significant benefits, they offer a 30-day "care-grade guarantee": if you don't see a difference in their excitement at meal time, the shine of their coat, even smaller stools and more energy, NomNomNow will buy your pet's next kibble or canned food, up to $40.

So, how do you get started? Although we're not sure if it was a limited-time offer or an always-available promotion, there was a 20% off trial featured on the top right corner of the page when we went to order from NomNomNow. We had to enter our name, email address, pet's name and type (dog or cat). We then were able to select from four recipes:

  • Heartland Beef Mash: ground beef, eggs, potatoes, carrots, peas, fish oil, and the NomNomNutrient Mix
  • Chicken Chow-Wow: diced chicken, sweet potatoes, yellow squash, fish oil, and NomNomNutrient Mix
  • Tasty Turkey Fare: ground turkey, eggs, brown rice, carrots, spinach, fish oil, and NomNomNutrient Mix
  • Porkalicious Potluck: pork potatoes, green beans, yellow squash, mushrooms, kale, fish oil, and NomNomNutrient Mix

The price you pay for your Dog Food delivery will depend on the weight of your pet, the delivery schedule you choose, and the flavor profile. For our pet (27 lbs., aiming for a weight of 24 lbs.), we were given the following trial price for our first order:

  • Heartland Beef Mash: $28.15/week
  • Chicken Chow-Wow: $30.14/week
  • Tasty Turkey Fare: $27.02/week
  • Porkalicious Potluck: $27.12/week

This was with a delivery of 56 meals every 4 weeks (which could take up a considerable amount of space in a freezer or refrigerator), with no charge for shipping.

NomNomNow has one of the strongest reputations in the Dog Food industry: an "A+" at the Better Business Bureau with zero registered complaints, and customer reviews that are almost entirely five stars. This provider's clients say that one of the best parts is the customer service, where representatives send personal, friendly emails or offer helpful advice over the phone. Even when issues arise, you can trust that NomNomNow's reps will handle your concerns quickly and pleasantly until you're satisfied with the outcome.

The only negative aspect of NomNomNow's Dog Food is the obvious one: the price. If you're used to spending $50 every 3 months for a bag of kibble, paying more than double that amount per month may be a non-starter for you. On the other hand, if your dog is experiencing significant health issues, food allergies, or weight gain, NomNomNow's approach could literally change your pet's life.

We love NomNomNow's approach to taking care of pets from the inside out, with freshly-made Dog and Cat Food that is tailored to each animal's needs. We strongly recommend them for people who want that individualized kind of care for their dog, going beyond the typical kibble and canned food to help their four-legged friends get optimal nutrition and health.

  • Selection. Does the dog food store provide a nice selection of dog food brands?
  • Ease of Use. Is the dog food store's website easy to navigate? Can you find the dog food you're looking for without wasting a lot of time or energy?
  • Cost. How do similar dog food brands compare in price across competitors?
