If you find yourself tapping rhythmically on your desk while you jam out to your favorite song, or air drumming in the car at a stop light, then you're already off to a great start in your drum lesson journey. Many of us enjoy the power of the drums in any good song and have an instinctive rhythm that makes us want to play along.

It used to be that you needed to attend drum lessons at a private residence or music shop to learn to play the drums, but it has since gotten much easier. Gone are the days of having to travel to lessons and pay for expensive teachers. With at-home drum lessons available via the internet, you can be a self-paced learner on whatever schedule you'd like.

Cost:

$49.95 for full access

If the website is any reflection of the actual drum lessons available through Begin Drumming, they are nothing extraordinary. We wish they would have previews or demos of their lessons on the website to get a better idea of what to expect if a purchase is made. There were no options to get further information from this website besides reading the long sales page and clicking to order the multimedia drum training system.

The computer-based training system includes 45 multimedia lessons where you are taught the basics like holding drumsticks, drum rudiments, and stroke types. Over 4 hours of video instruction are included as well as 52 pages of printable material to view on the screen or print, and 198 audio files. The audio files can be downloaded for listening while playing your drum kit. The rest of the course is meant for computer use, which seems a bit odd and makes it harder to apply. DVDs would be more ideal so you could cast the lessons onto your TV or download them onto your other devices to use while playing your actual drum kit.

If you provide your name and email address, you can get 5 free lessons emailed to you. By purchasing the full course instead, the cost is $49.95. This is a very reasonable price, but because it is such a good deal, it makes us question the quality and variety of the material you are receiving. All the lessons are taught by Jim McCarthy, who has taught drum lessons for over 20 years. In his bio, it also mentions that he has a Master's Degree in percussion performance, but it doesn't say where that degree is from. If you purchase Jim's Begin Drumming course and are unsatisfied, you have 8 weeks to contact customer service and receive a full refund.

Begin Drumming doesn't seem to be the most professional choice when it comes to taking drum lessons from home. The course and website are old school and you can't know exactly what you're getting by purchasing until you've already paid. To get higher quality lessons, try one of our top-rated drum lesson courses first.

DRUMS MADE EASY

Cost:

$477 one-time fee

Drums Made Easy has an extensive sales page and forces prospective customers to wade through long blocks of text to try and figure out what their product is all about. The website is full of spelling errors and visually unappealing blocks of sales pitches. The overall unprofessional presentation of the Drums Made Easy course makes us uncomfortable with the idea of purchasing from them.

The description of the course includes 3 DVDs, 34 step-by-step lessons, a 150+ page workbook, and some bonus DVDs with insider tips. In all, there are about 6 hours of footage. Throughout the sales page, there are two names mentioned in relation to the course. One is Shane "Steel" O'Neill who seems to be the drum instructor in the lessons. The other is Mike Ray, the writer of the whole sales pitch. Besides stating that he is from Sydney, Australia, we don't know much about his credentials or what his role in the Drums Made Easy course is.

The cost of the course is $477 (and supposedly this is a sale price?!). In addition to the price of the Drums Made Easy course, you will also be paying $20 for shipping and handling. A 60-day guarantee is in place for customers to receive refunds if they are unsatisfied with the drum lessons they receive. This refund does not include the $20 for shipping and handling. It is important to note that in the small print of the purchase agreement, buyers are agreeing to receive continued follow-up contact from the seller including emails, newsletters, telephone calls from telemarketing services, and more.

It almost goes without saying that the Drums Made Easy course is the least ideal option for drummers looking to improve their skills at home. The high cost of purchase along with the unprofessional presentation of the lesson material is enough to make us recommend one of the higher-rated drumming courses instead.

Continued from above

Online drum lessons come in the form of DVDs, downloads, or CD instructions. This is an appealing option for anyone wanting to save money, practice techniques on their own schedule, and learn to play the drums from the comfort of their own home.

Not all online drum lessons are created equal. When browsing through your options, consider the following things to ensure an effective purchase:

  • Cost. Are you receiving comprehensive lessons for the price you are paying? Make sure the lessons meet you at your skill level and provide enough material to make you better than when you started.
  • Product format. Will you be able to download your lessons onto your laptop? iPad? Cell phone? Practicing your drum set while viewing your online course needs to be convenient in order for it to be effective.
  • Return policy. You can't know exactly what your drum lessons will be like until you try them out, so if they are a disappointment, you'll want to be able to return the course for a refund.
