Cost:

$14.99/month

Drum Ambition was started in 2016, so the content as well as the website is crisp and modern. All the lesson videos are in HD and available for download on any device. In addition to video lessons, there are PDF downloads of all the sheet music included. To see just how high of quality these lessons are, Drum Ambition lets you view all of the module 1 lessons for free. This module has 20 lessons with videos ranging from 8 to 13 minutes each.

For $14.99 each month, you can subscribe to all of the content through Drum Ambition. Your entire subscription can be managed online and they allow you to cancel at any time. In fact, cancelling is so easy, all you have to do is access your account and click the big, yellow "unsubscribe" button. If you run into questions about your subscription, a live chat is available instantly on the website. Your account also comes with email and Skype support. Emails are answered within 24 hours and you can set up a Skype consultation at your convenience.

Simon DasGupta is the instructor throughout the entire course and has a brick-and-mortar drum studio in San Diego, California where he teaches drummers of all ages and levels. By viewing his free lessons you can see why Drum Ambition has such a good reputation and is so successful in teaching students through their courses. Each lesson comes with step-by-step demonstrations, practice tips, and sheet lessons. Module 1 alone is meant to take months or longer if students go through all the material and put in lots of practice time. If you need extra exercises, you can be assigned these via Skype through your account.

An additional resource to benefit students is Drum Ambition's online blog. It covers topics relevant to drummers like drum terminology, how to drum faster, how long it takes to learn the drums, and more. Some of the blogs answer questions about things like how to spin your sticks by including a video link to demonstrate how it is done.

We are impressed by what we found about Drum Ambition's step-by-step course. There is plenty of free material on the website and signing up for the course is simple. There is no return policy if you are unsatisfied with your purchase, but they make it easy to cancel at any time. We are confident that Drum Ambition will be beneficial for anyone looking to begin or improve their drumming skills.

Mikes Lessons is a database of 73 lessons for drummers of all experience levels. When you purchase a subscription, you have access to all of these lessons. They can be streamed to any device for convenient viewing. Lessons are categorized into topics like hand speed, foot speed, grooves, fills, independence, and rudiments and technique. These topics make it convenient for drummers to focus on specific skills they want to improve.

The subscription to Mikes Lessons works like a gym membership. You are continually charged for each month you have full access to the database until you decide to cancel your membership. To cancel, you send an email request. Since they do not prorate unused portions of the subscription, there is no way to receive any type of refund once you have decided to pay for a month or more of access to the database.

The drum lesson library contains a range of lesson titles from A -Z. You can also type into the search bar to find exactly what you are looking for. Each course has a name that describes what skill set will be focused on, the experience level required, how many lessons are included, and how much time that particular course will take. If you don't know where to start, a beginner course is available to teach you basic reading, grooves, fills, drum terminology, and key rudiments. This is a 45-minute course with 8 lessons total.

Mikes Lessons highlights 2 apps you can download in addition to using the courses on the website. The first is the Groove Scribe app that allows drummer to create, practice, share grooves, and more. The other is the Groove Freedom app that lets drummers practice challenging patterns along with the app. Both of these apps will aid drummers in their progression alongside the instruction offered through Mikes Lessons.

We think Mikes Lessons is a great course for drummers who know what skills they want to improve in their drumming progression. There is a beginner's course, but it is pretty short and may leave inexperienced drummers a little lost on where to turn next. Overall, the videos and content appear to be high-quality, so this is a good option for drummers as they pass beginner status and want to work on specific techniques.

Online drum lessons come in the form of DVDs, downloads, or CD instructions. This is an appealing option for anyone wanting to save money, practice techniques on their own schedule, and learn to play the drums from the comfort of their own home.

Not all online drum lessons are created equal. When browsing through your options, consider the following things to ensure an effective purchase:

  • Cost. Are you receiving comprehensive lessons for the price you are paying? Make sure the lessons meet you at your skill level and provide enough material to make you better than when you started.
  • Product format. Will you be able to download your lessons onto your laptop? iPad? Cell phone? Practicing your drum set while viewing your online course needs to be convenient in order for it to be effective.
  • Return policy. You can't know exactly what your drum lessons will be like until you try them out, so if they are a disappointment, you'll want to be able to return the course for a refund.
