Free initial evaluation

LegalZoom specializes in low-cost, easy-to-prepare legal documents. Of course, defending yourself in a DUI case probably requires more than a do-it-yourself approach, but LegalZoom still has you covered.

To begin, click on the blue "Start my Defense Evaluation" button on the main DUI page. You'll be asked a series of questions, such as:

  • Is this your first DUI?
  • Did anyone get hurt?
  • Did you take a Breathalyzer test?
  • Is your court date less than a week away?

Once you've answered those questions, you'll be asked to provide your first and last name, email address phone number, and zip code. After that, you'll receive a free DUI evaluation from one of LegalZoom's participating law firms, which will explain your options and how you can proceed with your case. Or, if you prefer to speak to an attorney right away, you can call their toll-free number; LegalZoom's hours are Monday through Friday from 5a-7p PT and weekends from 7a-4p PT.

LegalZoom also offers a number of helpful articles that might help you understand your rights and the court process; they can be found in the Article Center, under the U.S Law category and then the subcategory of DUI. We had to dig around to find them and would love to see them featured more prominently on the main DUI page on the site; some of the articles that were particularly informative were:

  • Dealing with DUI Charges
  • DUI Penalties and Punishments
  • State-specific DUI Laws
  • DUI Do's and Don'ts

We would like to see more information on the LegalZoom site, such as a listing of participating attorneys or an estimate of costs while working with one of their partner DUI lawyers. However, every case is very specific with circumstances that vary widely, so we understand that those estimates might not even be possible (or useful).

While we weren't able to find any reviews from LegalZoom customers regarding their DUI services, that doesn't dissuade us. Given the strong reputation of LegalZoom in all legal areas, we're confident in recommending them as a trustworthy starting point for your DUI case.

Legal Match is an attorney and client matching system and not a referral service. The website is professional and abundant with information but misses the mark to a certain extent.

If you're looking for a lawyer for your DUI arrest you would click on the "get started" button and choose from a list of legal categories. We found that a DUI offense would be found under "Criminal Law and Police". Your next step is to click on your criminal offense under "Drunk Driving". After applying your zip code or that of the area in which you were arrested you complete a rather extensive questionnaire about your current and past criminal history.

We didn't like this approach of providing such detailed information about ourselves and our history. We didn't know why some of it mattered in finding appropriate counsel to represent us. Legal Match does allow you to make your contact information private but that may limit the number of lawyers that are willing to acknowledge your case. the website states you must wait 1-3 days for lawyers to view your case. If someone is willing to represent your case, you have the option to have them text, call or email you as notification.

The website matching service is free to consumers and also provides an abundance of legal information if you like to read an article or blog.

Again the website was very professional and easy to use but it misses the mark with requiring too much private information and asks you wait longer than the other companies to see if any matches appear. We recommend you choose a higher ranked company for your next DUI lawyer.

But not all lawyer locator services are the same. When looking for DUI assistance, you'll want to look for a service with the following characteristics:

  • Database. How large and abundant is their list of DUI lawyers and other specialists? You'll want a company that maintains current lists of qualified attorneys from across the US to help with your legal matters.
  • Website functionality. How easy is it to maneuver their website? Is their DUI lawyer service professional and informative?
  • Process. What is the process of locating a DUI lawyer? Do you enter information about your case online, talk to a customer service representative, or wait for someone to call you back? has reviewed and ranked the best DUI Lawyer services. We hope these reviews help you find the quality legal assistance you need!
