Exercise Bikes in Alaska

When it comes to being in shape, Alaskan residents have many available options. Among these are a brisk walk in the woods (remember the bear mace), a daily trip to the gym (make sure the membership fee is already figured into the budget), or a home exercise bike (this can be done in rain or shine, daylight or dark). Exercise bikes have long been considered one of the favorite pieces of exercise equipment. Since experts recommend some form of cardiovascular exercise for 30 minutes each day, riding an exercise bike while at home or in the office is an ideal way to stay physically fit.

Exercise bikes are available with a wide range of features. Basic bikes offer workout resistance, quiet handling, and stability. More advanced models offer electronic features that track calories burned, distance ridden, and average speed. Still others provide luxuries such as wireless heart rate monitors, fold-out magazine racks, and water bottle holders. Regardless of the needs and preferences of the cyclist, there is a bike out there with all the desirable features.

Two basic types of exercise bikes are available. A recumbent bike places the rider in a reclined position, with a comfortable, chair-like seat that supports the back and provides extra stability. The pedals are located in front of the rider, putting little pressure on the back. The rider's weight is evenly distributed over a large area. Since the seat provides lumbar support, this type of bike is more comfortable for those with back problems or arthritis. The second type of exercise bike is an upright. This is built more like a traditional bicycle, with a padded saddle seat and the pedals directly underneath the body. The hands are positioned in front, while the rider sits upright. Physical therapists often recommend either type of exercise bikes to their patients who are in recovery from an accident or surgery, depending on the type of support needed.

Regardless of physical needs with an exercise bike, Alaskan residents can find one that will meet their requirements.
