It offers a larger, chair-like seat that supports the back and offers extra stability. The rider is in a reclined position, with weight evenly distributed over a larger area. The recumbent bike provides lumbar support, and the pedals located in front of the cyclist offer support for the feet, putting little pressure on the back. This is also the type of exercise bike recommended for people who have back problems or other orthopedic conditions.

Upright bikes are built more like a traditional bicycle, with a padded saddle seat and pedals placed directly underneath the body. The arms are required to extend forward to grip the handlebars. Upright bikes offer resistance options, enabling the rider to increase the workout intensity as strength is built up. Experts recommend beginning slowly with any exercise bike, and gradually working up to more intense workouts. A good cardiovascular workout system includes riding an exercise bike for 30 minutes each day, 5 days a week.
