Many residents of New Mexico who have tried aerobics and running as part of a physical fitness program have discovered that although these activities deliver an excellent cardiovascular workout, there is a significant jarring impact on hips, knees, and ankles. A different option that can give the same strengthening benefits to heart and lungs with a low-impact, gentle workout is an exercise bike.
Exercise bikes are becoming more popular as people are looking for ways to remain physically fit while saving the monthly fee that is being paid to the gym, and at the same time achieve a low-impact workout on exercise equipment. Many people in New Mexico are finding they enjoy having the freedom of working out at home whenever their schedule allows, as well as the options to easily watch TV, check emails, or read a book during the exercise routine.
There are two basic types of exercise bikes. The recumbent bike is usually a larger bike, with a chair-like seat that supports the back and puts the rider in a reclined position. The rider's weight is evenly distributed over a larger area, and the comfortable seat provides lumbar support. The pedals are located out in front of the rider, and placement of the pedals is designed to put minimal pressure on the back. The recumbent exercise bike is ideal for people who are more than 50 pounds overweight, have back problems, or suffer from arthritis.
The upright exercise bike is quite similar to a traditional bicycle. It has a padded saddle-style seat, pedals placed directly below the seat, and handlebars out in front. This type of bike may work the gluteal muscles better because the rider can fully extend the hips through the cycle rotation.
Exercise bikes can give a great cardiovascular workout to anyone wanting to achieve physical fitness goals or to those individuals desiring to reach and maintain ideal weight.
