The comfortable seat provides excellent lumbar support, and body weight is distributed evenly over a larger surface. The recumbent bike is recommended for people who have back problems, arthritis, or are more than 50 pounds overweight. The second option, the upright bike, is similar to a traditional bicycle. It has a smaller, padded seat for the rider to sit upright on. The foot pedals are placed directly underneath the body, and the handlebars are out in front. Experienced cyclists say this may work the gluteal muscles better than the recumbent, since the rider fully extends both legs through the cycle.

When choosing an exercise bike, a good understanding of the available features will aid in the selection process. Minimal features for an exercise bike should include quiet handling, workout resistance, and a seat that adjusts easily to accommodate the rider's height. Bikes with a few more options may include magnetic resistance and heart-rate control. Top-of-the-line exercise bikes offer such things as push-button resistance control, a longer warranty, and a large number of built-in workout programs. There are many features available, in a wide array of combinations.
