Exercise Bikes in Iowa

Thanks to modern medicine, symptoms of these diseases can be partly alleviated, but according to the old adage, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. What can a person in Iowa do to prevent chronic disease?

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 150 minutes of moderate-intensity cardiovascular exercise each week goes a long way when it comes to increasing health and preventing chronic disease. Cardiovascular exercise strengthens the heart, which in turn significantly lowers blood pressure and regulates cholesterol levels. Riding an exercise bike for 30 minutes each day is an excellent form of cardiovascular exercise.

Several types of exercise bikes are available. The recumbent bike has a large, chair-like seat that supports the back and offers increased stability. Since the rider is in a reclining position, the weight is evenly distributed over a larger area. The seat provides lumbar support, and pedals are located in front of the rider. The recumbent exercise bike is ideal for people who experience back problems, are more than 50 pounds overweight, or suffer from arthritis. This type of exercise bike exerts very little stress on the spine, joints and limbs.

Upright bikes are just as the name implies; a cyclist sits upright on a padded, saddle-style seat and uses pedals that are directly underneath the body. The hands are positioned in front of the rider. Cycling experts say upright bikes may work the gluteal muscles better than recumbent bikes, since the rider can fully extend the hips through the cycle.

Exercise bikes come with a broad array of built-in functions. Some have arm movement attachments that allow the rider to work the arms to build tone and increase workout intensity. Others offer built-in fans to keep the cyclist cool, speakers with iPod connectivity, and wireless heart-rate monitors with built-in workout programs. Regardless of a rider's preferences, there is an exercise bike with the desired functions.

Exercise bikes are an ideal choice for Iowa residents when it comes to taking charge of personal health and fitness.
