Manhattan Fruitier

Cost:

From $40 to $375

Inspired by Dutch still-life paintings and nature, Manhattan Fruitier's products are created to delight. The fresh fruit gifts have been handcrafted to provide tasteful and elegant gifts for any occasion. All baskets are made from natural materials and are designed to be reusable and minimize waste. They can be delivered anywhere in the US but do have some options only available for delivery in NYC.

Manhattan Fruitier has many options to choose from and range in price from $40 to $375. Baskets can include: fruit, flowers, nuts, chocolates, brownies, cookies and dried fruit. One basket even offers a jar of apricot jam made fresh in the Hamptons. All contents of the basket are detailed in the description, but often one of the contents listed is "Fresh Fruit - Exotic and Seasonal fresh fruits" so you do not know if you will receive apples, oranges, pears or another type of fruit.

The York Hamper is a great example of this and will cost $60, or $75 if you want only organic fruits. It will include approximately 9 pieces of fresh fruit (exotic or seasonal fresh fruits), along with the cute, closed lid hamper and some fresh flowers and leaves to create an artful delight. The picture shows the basket including a kiwi, 3 oranges, an apple, 2 pears, a mango, and an avocado, but you are not guaranteed that this is what you will receive. You do need to be cautious when comparing prices of baskets here to other sites on this list as you will most likely get less fruit for the same price, but it will look amazing!

Shopping for baskets on the Manhattan Fruitier site is very easy. They have a special feature called "Quick Shop" that allows you to easily narrow your options by price and occasion so that you can quickly pick the basket or box that is perfect. While viewing the details behind each product, there is also a section that allows you to put in your zip code so you can learn the shipping price while you are browsing. This will help you determine the total price of the basket when determining which one to purchase and you won't be shocked by the shipping prices when checking out. If you are not local to NYC, you can click the checkbox at the top of the search page to show only the results that deliver nationwide. This puts the NYC options at the end of the list, so you are not distracted by a gift that cannot be delivered to your location.

Manhattan Fruitier gives you several ways to pay for your fruit basket, including 3 major credit cards (sorry Discover card users) and PayPal, making it convenient to purchase gifts. They do indicate that they protect your information but are a little vague on the details of how they do it.

Manhattan Fruitier is dedicated to inspiring delight with the products they deliver and the customer service experience they provide. They cater to every customer and provide personalized service by listening carefully and exceeding expectations. Even though you are unable to return your gift basket once delivered (since it contains perishable goods), they do provide a satisfaction guarantee ensuring your fruit arrives in pristine condition or it will be replaced. This gives you the confidence of knowing that your experience will be positive and the gift will be beautiful!

The main downsides to Manhattan Fruitier are cost, the lack of specifics on the type of fresh fruit you will receive for many of their baskets and the fact that some offerings are only available to a limited NYC audience. But they do make beautiful creations and you can tell that they pay attention to the details. They take the time to pick and choose the best fruits for your basket and make sure it is free from bruising or blemishes. Also, any of the fruit that does not meet their high standards for quality to include in a basket is donated to City Harvest, a food rescue organization in NYC. All the reviews clearly indicate many satisfied customers and it comes as no surprise that they also have an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.

So, if you are looking for a sophisticated and artfully styled gift that is sure to leave an impression, Manhattan Fruitier is a solid choice, especially if you are local to NYC.

Cost:

From $35 to $125

FTD offerings include flowers, plants, gift baskets, balloons, chocolates, and fruit baskets. The options for fruit baskets are somewhat limited and most include other non-fruit items in them, like chocolates, nuts or cheese. The pictures on the website show average looking baskets, but we recognize that FTD usually fills their orders from local FTD affiliates, so what the basket may look like once delivered could be different.

The detailed fruit baasket descriptions on FTD's website do explain what is included in each item, but no mention is made of where the fruit comes from or what quality and inspection process they complete to ensure the fruit is fresh and blemish free. But FTD does have a "Love it, or we'll make it right" guarantee, which helps put customers at ease.

Fruit boxes and baskets at FTD range in price from $35 for the "Good" size "Fruit and Cheese Box", compared to $125 for the "Share the Goodness of California Fruit & Gourmet Basket". The range of prices creates options that can appeal to a variety of budgets. Shipping costs can be pricey, and they are not shown until you get to the very end of the order process (after you have entered your shipping information), so until then you do not know how much more the basket will be than the advertised price. They do offer an FTD Gold Membership that you can purchase for $30 that will give you free standard shipping, no service fees and reduced shipping on same day or premium delivery methods for one year. FTD accepts standard payment methods, but also includes PayPal.

The downsides to using FTD would be the concern for quality and the lack of many options when it comes to fruit baskets. There were also several negative reviews on the Better Business Bureau website, but all of them seemed to be closed satisfactorily with a full refund due to FTD's customer service pledge. The Gold Membership is also a nice option to help save on shipping costs if you plan to make multiple purchases in the year. Overall, FTD is average when it comes to fruit baskets, which is why this one ends up in near the middle-to-end of our list.

Some questions that might come to mind include where do I find a reputable company, how can I ensure the fruit is good and not too ripe, what type of fruit do I want to include in the basket? When looking for the best company to purchase your fruit basket, you'll want to consider the following:

  • Supplier of the Fruit. Where is the fruit grown and how does it make its way to your gift basket? Will it change hands several times before it gets to you? Or will it come straight from the orchard? The freshest fruits will come from companies with a direct connection to an Orchard.
  • Selection. How many different choices does the company have? Do they have a range of prices and sizes available so that you can find the perfect one? Is there variety in the contents of each basket to delight the recipient?
  • Cost. How does the cost compare from one site to another? How much fruit am I getting in the basket compared to a similar product on another site? What are the shipping costs? Are there any service fees?
  • Satisfaction Guarantee. Does the site offer a satisfaction guarantee? Under what circumstances will that guarantee be valid? Fresh fruit is a perishable item that is rarely able to be returned. Working with a company that has a satisfaction guarantee will protect you and ensure you are satisfied with your purchase.
