Cost:

From $26 to $250

Canterberry Gifts is another new gift basket store - so new that the site doesn't even have an About Us page! There's also no listing with the BBB and few customer product reviews to be found, neither on the individual gift baskets sold nor on third-party sites across the web. But, we were encouraged to see a handful of reviews on the site, all extremely positive and praising the overall shopping experience when buying gift baskets through Canterberry Gifts.

You can shop by type of basket, price range or occasion, or browse all available gift baskets. This gift basket company offers some clever combinations we didn't see on competitor sites. Some of our favorites were:

  • Dan's Premium Pail of Treats ($59.95): who doesn't want summer sausage, garlic-stuffed olives, sharp cheese, pretzels and hot mustard, spiced almonds and more, all packed into a paint can marked with a "Dan the Sausageman" logo?
  • Awards Night Movie Gift Basket ($69.95): movie-sized candy boxes of all your favorites (e.g. Swedish Fish, M&Ms, Milk Duds and more), popcorn, plus a Golden Awards Trophy and Awards Night magnet. You can add on a $15 gift card from iTunes, Google Play, or Fandango so that your recipient can pick a movie to stream at home.
  • He's A Motorcycle Man Gift Basket ($99.95): having a hard time finding something for your favorite manly man (or womanly woman...who loves her Harley)? This basket has "mementos that remind [them] of motoring down the highway", including Harley Davidson 3-cheese snack mix, a ceramic motorcycle bank and picture frame, Flame Riders bandanna, and other treats and gifts.

There were no add-on options given, so each gift basket comes as you see it. Other gift basket stores often offer the ability to throw in some extra candy, some balloons or other upgrades, so keep in mind that "what you see is what you get" with this retailer.

Like many providers of Gift Baskets, Canterberry Gifts will give you a 10% discount on your first order if you sign up for their email newsletter. You should see that offer as a pop-up when you visit the site. (We actually had a hard time making that pop-up go away so that we could finally shop the store!)

We didn't find any free shipping options here. In fact, other than the ground shipping option for $9.95, all of the other delivery choices for the gift basket we selected were at least $37 (3 business days). If you want next-day delivery, you'll pay over $80! (Your fees will be determined by the weight and dimensions of the gift basket you order.) This is definitely not the most affordable gift basket company if you need something there in a hurry.

Another issue we found with this newer gift basket company is their lack of a satisfaction guarantee. The return policy says that you can return unopened items within 15 days of delivery, but what if your chocolate arrives in bad condition, your mug is broken, or the sausage tastes rancid? We'd like to see Canterberry Gifts be more specific about what a customer can expect, since our highest-ranked retailers are very clear (and usually provide a 100% guarantee, no questions asked).

Because of the overwhelmingly positive nature of the few customer reviews we found and the unique assortment of gift baskets, Canterberry Gifts earns a somewhat tentative 3-star rating. To maintain this score - or better yet, to move up in our rankings - we'd like to see this gift basket company develop a solid satisfaction guarantee, offer some free shipping options, and expand the number of customer reviews on the site. We look forward to seeing this retailer's growth in the future.

THE BEST GIFT BASKETS

Cost:

From $30 to $400

The Best Gift Baskets is one of the newer gift basket companies on the market. You'll find the typical assortment of gift-giving occasions like baby showers and birthdays, without too many unique options that really jump out at you. Even the holiday-themed gift baskets weren't really specific to that celebration: the Halloween choices had candy but nothing with pumpkins, skeletons or decorations, the New Year's baskets primarily focused on alcohol, and so on.

We found the pricing on The Best Gift Baskets to be relatively high. For example, the Ghirardelli Galore Chocolate Gift Basket was priced at $59.99 (which doesn't include delivery). Considering that the package contains 2 bags of Ghirardelli squares, 2 candy bars, and 2 pouches of hot chocolate, you do the math and decide if that sounds like a good deal. We also didn't see any possibilities for adding extra items like candy or stuffed animals, no personalization options for the gift packaging, and no reviews from previous customers.

Shipping is more expensive with The Best Gift Baskets than some of the retailers in our review. Expect to pay $14.95 for ground shipping, no matter what kind of gift basket you order. Expedited options are available, starting at $24.95 for 3 business day delivery, $39.95 for next business day, and $59.95 for Saturday delivery.

What kind of a reputation does The Best Gift Baskets have? Great question. At the bottom of the site, it clearly says "no rating available" when looking at the Google score. There's also no listing for this company on the Better Business Bureau database - and, strangely, when we called the customer service number on the company's "Contact Us" page, it was a personal phone number! (We wondered if it was the "Bill" listed in the email contact info. The site does say that's his personal email. That's awkward!)

This could be the best gift basket company to hit the market - but with such a limited history, it's hard to know if it will really deliver. Will they honor their 100% satisfaction guarantee? Will you get attentive, courteous customer service if there's a problem? There's no way of knowing until this store builds up a history of solid customer interactions and reviews.

Continued from above

But, as you'll quickly notice as you begin to shop for a gift basket, some companies consistently deliver high-quality selections while others provide just the bare minimum and don't put much thought or effort into the presentation or the included items.

To make sure that your gift basket is a delivery that impresses, here are several criteria to keep in mind as you consider the gift basket companies on the market today:

  • Variety. How many options does the service offer? Within a single category (e.g. baby shower, wedding, get well soon), do you have a number of choices?
  • Quality. Are the products gourmet, high-end, and/or well-constructed, or are you getting cheap things you could buy at a supermarket or dollar store?
  • Price. What will you spend on the gift basket of your choice? Do you get a good value for what you spend, especially compared with other stores? Does the company offer any customer-friendly perks like free shipping?
  • Customer Service. How easy does the gift basket company make it to find what you want? Do they offer a satisfaction guarantee if the basket is late or just doesn't meet expectations? What do previous customers have to say about their experience with the company?

TopConsumerReviews.com has reviewed and ranked the best gift baskets available today. We hope this information helps you find the perfect basket for your next gift-giving occasion!
