Greek Lessons Better Business Bureau Reliability Seal

Did you know that up to 25% of the English language is derived from Greek? While Shakespeare may have used the phrase "It's all Greek to me!" to indicate that something was not understandable, thousands of language students know that learning Greek can be fun, easy, and even useful.

What interests you about learning the Greek language? Maybe you have family members or business associates who live in Greece, or your upcoming travels will take you to Santorini, Athens, or Crete and you'd like to be able to order your spanakopita or baklava like a native. Or, perhaps you'd like to study a language that uses a non-Roman alphabet, while gaining a better grasp of your native language of English.

Rosetta Stone

ROSETTA STONE

If you've ever thought of learning a language, you've probably heard the name Rosetta Stone. A 30-day, money-back guarantee and famous clientele like NASA and the US State Department definitely give this provider of Greek Lessons a level of credibility not often matched by other providers. However, results vary, and Rosetta Stone's pricing may be out of reach for some students. Read More... Visit

Living Language makes it easy and convenient to learn Greek, whether you choose their online course or their print/CD lesson sets. And, if you need some one-on-one help, you can access their e-Tutoring program (for an extra charge; two credits are included free with the 1-year online course subscription) - a great add-on not found in most companies' Greek Lessons. Greek Pod 101

GREEK POD 101

Known as GreekPod101, the Greek Lessons offered by Innovative Language make use of audio, written, and video materials to give you a comprehensive package for learning. You'll have to give them your email address to try out their Greek program, and the heavy sales emphasis in the beginning may be a little much for some new users. You'll want to try the GreekPod101 7-day trial before selecting a membership with access to Innovative Language's full range of Greek Lessons, just to make sure it's a good fit.

Pimsleur

PIMSLEUR

Learners who prefer to study by listening have turned to Pimsleur for language instruction for many years. While this approach is effective for some, Pimsleur's steep cost and notable lack of written materials make them a less attractive choice for Greek Lessons than many of the other choices in our review.

LingQ

LING Q

LingQ - pronounced like "Link" - takes an innovative approach to teaching Greek, using lessons created by other users and authentic texts, to help reach a more native-like fluency. The system is fairly confusing, however, and students who are new to language learning in general might be better served by a more traditional approach. LingQ's point system is also vague when it comes to figuring out exactly how much you might spend while learning Greek.

STROKES INTERNATIONAL

Direct-from-the-warehouse usually means better pricing. Unfortunately, One Way Furniture's prices are higher than the competition, their selection is narrow, and their reputation leaves room for improvement. You will probably have a better shopping experience with a higher-ranked retailer of home theater seating.

Continued from above

If you're a student of the antiquities, from religious texts to classic literature, your education will be greatly enriched by being able to read ancient documents in their original tongue. As anyone who speaks more than one language can tell you, there truly is a depth and richness that is lost in translation; imagine what the Sermon on the Mount would have sounded like in its original language, or how the imagery of The Iliad would shine through when read in Greek.

Whatever your reasons are for beginning - or continuing - your studies of the Greek language, you may find it challenging to take a class locally. Although it is used by approximately 15 million native speakers worldwide, Greek is not taught in many colleges and universities. Fortunately, there are a number of reputable programs that will allow you to access Greek lessons from the comfort of your own home, typically through a series of online lessons, downloadable software programs, podcasts or other audio lessons, or even a combination of all of those teaching methods.

Not sure which online Greek lessons are right for you? Here are some ideas to consider when making your decision:

  • Written Component or Spoken-Only. Because Greek uses a different alphabet, you'll need some extra lessons if being able to read and write in the language is important to your studies. On the other hand, if your primary focus is being able to speak fluently, you may not want to worry about the written aspect of the Greek language.
  • Skill Level. How far does the program go in terms of fluency - beginner, intermediate, and/or advanced? Will you have to spend extra money once you get beyond your current level, or is the program all-inclusive? If you already have some knowledge of Greek, does the program contain enough new information to be useful
  • Instructional Methods. Some programs focus heavily on one approach to learning a language, such as audio lessons or visual cues. We strongly suggest you take advantage of any free trial offered by the language program you're considering, to see if it's a good fit for your preferred learning style.
  • Value. Although some Greek lessons are more expensive than others, it can be a solid investment if it gets results. Will you get your money's worth, based on others' results with the Greek language program?
