Halloween has become one of the most entertaining holidays of the year. Kids and adults both get to dress up in fun and frightening costumes, attend parties, enter contests, and share in festivities. Halloween costumes themselves have become far more elaborate than the old "bedsheet-over-the-head" ghost of yesteryear.

Indeed, in retail stores you can find yourself spending hundreds of dollars on just one costume. Halloween costumes themselves have become far more elaborate than the old "bedsheet-over-the-head" ghost of yesteryear. With the advent of the internet, however, you can save 50% or more off traditional retail prices. From the comfort of your own home, you can easily browse hundreds of costumes to find just the one you're looking for.

Costumes by Shindigz

COSTUMES BY SHINDIGZ Visit Site

Costumes by Shindigz allows you to browse their inventory in a number of ways. First, along the left side of the screen you'll find costume categories - Top 10 Costumes, Top 10 Accessories, Themed Costumes, Disney Costumes, and so on. Clicking on Themed costumes you are presented with nearly 40 different types - from Angels to Zombies, and even including 1950's greasers. Entering any of these theme types, you are presented with thumbnail views of related costumes and accessories - grouped together for your convenience.

If you'd rather search according to the costume-wearer, Costumes By Shindigz provides options along the top of the screen. You can search between 8 categories; Adult, Teen, Child, Infant/Toddler, Pets, Mother/Daughter, Couples and Families. Some of these selections let you further refine your search by gender of the costume wearer. Once selected, all related costumes and accessories are displayed in thumbnail for your review.

Finding the costume you want is fairly easy. We do wish their thumbnail previews were a little larger, however; they're a little too small for our liking. Most of the time we had to click on the thumbnail to see the larger costume, because we couldn't tell much from the thumbnail picture.

Costume prices were competitive among the sites we reviewed. However, the number of costumes provided was less than most other sites. While Costumes by Shindigz provided a good variety, we would love to see more depth to their selections.

In addition to costumes, Costumes by Shindigz also provides links to other Halloween-related items. Click on Party Essentials, for example, and you're presented with a selection of Activities, Favors, Table, Party Apparel, Special Effects, and Treats/Accessories to choose from. Or, choose the Party Décor selection and you can select Balloons, Banners, Decorating Accents, Outdoor Decorations, and Theme Décor. They even have a special Sale link.

If you're interested in throwing a party - not just a Halloween Party, but any kind of party - Costumes by Shindigz gives you a link where your can find tips on over 200 different kinds of parties - from Baseball parties to Winter Olympics parties, and everything in between. This by itself is an incredible resource of information.

Costumes by Shindigz does a good job answering questions, even before they're asked. Under Customer Service you find links to several categories of information, including sizing charts and shipping information. Under the FAQ category, you find answers to 18 commonly asked questions.

Checking the status of your order is easy with their online tracking system. Most orders are sent out within two days of order placement. Costumes by Shindigz also offers shipping deals on purchases over $50 on standard ground orders - a helpful money-saving feature.

In case you're not happy with your order, most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery, minus a 15% restocking fee.

Costumes by Shindigz gets good marks for delivering an enjoyable shopping experience to their customers. With good search options, competitive pricing, and great customer service section, they obviously place a high level of importance on their customers. We wish they could provide more depth in their costume selections and same-day-shipping.

Costumes 4 Less

COSTUMES 4 LESS Visit Site

Costumes4Less has an impressive selection of Halloween costumes, along with a selection of party supplies, wedding supplies, shoes, and - oddly enough - lingerie. At the time of our review, they carried more than 9,000 costume items ranging from infant to adult, across a wide variety of brands and themes. Prices start at just over $8 and go all the way up to nearly $1,500.

One of the easiest ways to find what you're looking for is to use Costume4Less' Costume Finder, located on their main Halloween Costume page. You can choose to filter their inventory by age range, gender, price, category, or theme. There's also a handy scrolling section beneath the Costume Finder that shows popular costume themes; we did think that some of them were a little outdated (e.g. Powerpuff Girls and Alice Through the Looking Glass).

We thought it was amusing to see a "Wheel of Fortune" pop-up when we visited the site: spin the wheel to get a discount ranging from 1% to 5% on your purchase. Be aware that you'll have to enter your email after you spin, and that the coupon is only valid for 24 hours. (For what it's worth, we spun and got a 5% discount.) You'll want that discount - Costumes4Less' prices were almost always higher than what we found on competitor websites.

Shipping is free on orders of $65 and higher, with a delivery timeframe of up to 8 business days. Expect to pay $7.95 in shipping costs for the first item, $4.95 for the second item, and $3.95 for the third item if your order is less than $65.

One confusing aspect of Costumes4Less' shipping policies is that you have to pay attention to which warehouse your items would be shipped from. When you enter your zip code on the Shipping information section (under the customer service link at the top of the page), you get a table with nearly two dozen warehouses and your expected delivery dates. If you're ordering multiple costume items, it's up to you to figure out if you'll get your items when you need them if they're coming from different locations. That's a layer of hassle that many customers won't like.

Given that the site proudly announces that Costumes4Less has been "online since 2003", we were surprised to see that they have no grade or accreditation with the Better Business Bureau. As we began to read what customers had to say about their experience with this retailer, it became apparent that people are generally not so thrilled with Costumes4Less. The words they most often use are "cheap", "poor quality", and "rip-off" - definitely not what you want to hear when deciding where to get your Halloween costume.

Many customers specifically disliked Costumes4Less' approach to returns: expect a 5% restocking fee and no refund on any shipping charges. If you want an exchange, however, you can do so for free - but with so many shoppers saying that the costumes or accessories they received were poorly made, fell apart when they got them, or were just "off" in general, this exchange policy doesn't seem like it'll do you much good.

For all of these reasons, Costumes4Less failed to impress with respect to Halloween costume shopping. We suggest you take a look at a more reputable retailer for your purchase.

No more driving from store to store, fighting the crowds, or settling for what's "left over" after all the good costumes have been taken. With the advent of the internet, you can save 50% or more off traditional retail prices. From the comfort of your own home, you can easily browse hundreds of costumes to find just the one you're looking for.

When shopping at different online Halloween costume stores, you want to consider a few factors. Some of these include:

  • Selection.  Some stores have thousands of costumes available; others may have just a couple hundred. The more costumes they have, the greater chance you'll find what you're looking for.
  • Cost.  Even among online stores, costs vary widely. You want to find a store that reliably has low prices, passing the savings on to you.
  • Customer Service.  Do they let you check the status of your order online? Answer your questions in a FAQ section? Provide support after the sale?
