California-based Trendy Halloween wants you to be the talk of the trick-or-treat on your street. From the newest animatronics to the most-wanted costumes, their selection rivals the best in the business.
Finding what you're looking for is easy on the Trendy Halloween site. If you already have an idea of what you need, click in the search box at the top of the page where it says "Fear not!" Otherwise, use the categories at the top of the page, keeping an eye on the drop-downs for more specific options. These categories include:
Once you've selected a category, the images in the results make it easy to see what they have to offer. You can also look on the left-hand side of the page to sort the results even further, especially if you're looking for a specific character or theme.
Prices are definitely competitive at Trendy Halloween. We checked several of this year's most popular costumes for adults and children and found that TH always had the lowest price. Also, if you click on the link at the very bottom of the page where it says "College Student Discount", TH offers an additional savings of 15% for signing up for their Geekary newsletter; it looks like that discount may be available even if you're not a student.
With respect to shipping, what you'll pay depends on several factors. If your order is over $49.99 and weighs less than 6 lbs., you'll get free shipping within 3-7 business days. But, if your order is less than $50 or weighs more than 6 lbs., expect to pay a minimum of $10.99 for shipping. Trendy Halloween explains that this is to help cover their costs on some of the larger items they carry, like animatronic decorations, but it could be frustrating for a customer to have to try and place an order that meets the requirements for free shipping.
We were also less than impressed with this retailer's exchange/return policy, compared with their competition. Trendy Halloween does not offer any exchanges, period: you'll have to return the item for a refund and then place a new order, assuming the costume is still in stock. In order to return a Halloween costume, you'll need to get a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) within 14 days of delivery; you'll then have 20 days to get the costume back to Trendy Halloween.
On the plus side, Trendy Halloween has a great reputation: an A+ rating as an accredited business with the Better Business Bureau, lots of followers on their various social media channels, and numerous compliments from shoppers who said that the customer service department handled issues in a pleasant, prompt, and efficient way.
We also really like the way that Trendy Halloween focuses on - you guessed it - the hottest trends for the current year. They maintain a Pinterest board called "SpookBook" for each calendar year, showing the most popular costumes, accessories, and decorations - helping even the most clueless Halloween shoppers to be on point. You'll find all of the items from that SpookBook in the link right on the main page.
Overall, Trendy Halloween is a solid place to shop for your Halloween costume, costume party, or decorations. Just be aware that shipping costs may be higher than some of the other retailers in our review, especially on heavier packages.
Costumes4Less has an impressive selection of Halloween costumes, along with a selection of party supplies, wedding supplies, shoes, and - oddly enough - lingerie. At the time of our review, they carried more than 9,000 costume items ranging from infant to adult, across a wide variety of brands and themes. Prices start at just over $8 and go all the way up to nearly $1,500.
One of the easiest ways to find what you're looking for is to use Costume4Less' Costume Finder, located on their main Halloween Costume page. You can choose to filter their inventory by age range, gender, price, category, or theme. There's also a handy scrolling section beneath the Costume Finder that shows popular costume themes; we did think that some of them were a little outdated (e.g. Powerpuff Girls and Alice Through the Looking Glass).
We thought it was amusing to see a "Wheel of Fortune" pop-up when we visited the site: spin the wheel to get a discount ranging from 1% to 5% on your purchase. Be aware that you'll have to enter your email after you spin, and that the coupon is only valid for 24 hours. (For what it's worth, we spun and got a 5% discount.) You'll want that discount - Costumes4Less' prices were almost always higher than what we found on competitor websites.
Shipping is free on orders of $65 and higher, with a delivery timeframe of up to 8 business days. Expect to pay $7.95 in shipping costs for the first item, $4.95 for the second item, and $3.95 for the third item if your order is less than $65.
One confusing aspect of Costumes4Less' shipping policies is that you have to pay attention to which warehouse your items would be shipped from. When you enter your zip code on the Shipping information section (under the customer service link at the top of the page), you get a table with nearly two dozen warehouses and your expected delivery dates. If you're ordering multiple costume items, it's up to you to figure out if you'll get your items when you need them if they're coming from different locations. That's a layer of hassle that many customers won't like.
Given that the site proudly announces that Costumes4Less has been "online since 2003", we were surprised to see that they have no grade or accreditation with the Better Business Bureau. As we began to read what customers had to say about their experience with this retailer, it became apparent that people are generally not so thrilled with Costumes4Less. The words they most often use are "cheap", "poor quality", and "rip-off" - definitely not what you want to hear when deciding where to get your Halloween costume.
Many customers specifically disliked Costumes4Less' approach to returns: expect a 5% restocking fee and no refund on any shipping charges. If you want an exchange, however, you can do so for free - but with so many shoppers saying that the costumes or accessories they received were poorly made, fell apart when they got them, or were just "off" in general, this exchange policy doesn't seem like it'll do you much good.
For all of these reasons, Costumes4Less failed to impress with respect to Halloween costume shopping. We suggest you take a look at a more reputable retailer for your purchase.
