With a name like eBags, you might be wondering how this retailer fares when it comes to shopping for your favorite designer crossbody, a new purse for the holidays, or something lightweight for everyday use. Let's see how they measure up against the competition.

As we were looking specifically for handbags, navigating the eBags website was not as easy as many others in this category. There isn't an easily accessible icon or drop down menu to take you to handbags. We had to use the website's search engine in order to find their handbag section. Their collection of handbags is just over 3500, so there is definitely a lot to choose from. The bags can be sorted by category, color, brand, material, features, size, customer rating, customer opinions, price, gender, end use, trend, device type, and sports fan gear.

Customer rating and customer opinion seemed to be the same thing, so we did a bit of digging. Customer rating refers to how many stars customers give each item; customer opinions are more like high school superlatives, such as "most organized" and "most stylish" (neither of which we won in our high school yearbook!). End use refers to what most people use the bag for, such as college, travel, work, etc. So, they do have some good ways to help you look for exactly what you need.

One of the biggest ways eBags differs from the other online retailers we reviewed is their lack of designer bags. All of the other retailers had bags by impressive designers available, but eBags is clearly more for the shopper that is less interested in the label, and more interested in if the bag looks nice and serves its purpose, which we totally get! Many of the bags are attractive, and have an attractive price tag as well. One perk they offer is a lifetime warranty on any of their eBags brand merchandise. There is also a drop down menu offering information about warranties for other brands sold by the company, which is a nice touch.

eBags is currently not shipping to any country other than the United States and does not ship to P.O. Boxes, military APO/DPO/FPO addresses or US Territories/Protectorates. Additionally, not all shipping options are available to Hawaii and Alaska. eBags claims to have an easy return policy, which is true. It is easy to return their products. Customers are able to return the merchandise within 30 days, but like many other deal sites, there is a fee for the return. While you are not required to pay the shipping cost, there is a flat fee of $7.95 per item returned, not per transaction. So, if you purchased 3 bags and were unhappy with all three, you'd receive the amount you paid back, minus $23.85. So, in a world where big retailers offer free returns, it's hard to make a purchase with a retailer that penalizes the consumer for returning merchandise.

eBags is accredited by the Better Business Bureau and has an A- rating because they have 69 complaints filed against them. According to reviews listed on the BBB website and other third-party sources, eBags does not seem to be a reliable retailer. Customer reviews relayed poor quality of customer service and receiving phony emails about deals only to find the price of the item that was on sale had recently had a price hike, so the price was the same as before the so called "discount." Another customer wrote that she was charged to return a bag that smelled like it had been in a fire. Sure, everyone wants the hottest deals, but a literal fire isn't quite what we had in mind!

eBags, like many of the other websites we evaluated, seems great on the surface, but, in general, has received bad customer service feedback. Their selection of bags and the prices are good, but, based on customer reviews and their less-than-customer-friendly return policy, you'll be taking a gamble compared with rival stores offering handbags.

Continued from above

However, not all online handbag stores are the same. Before moving forward, it's important to shop from a store that provides:

  • Wide Selection. Some stores offer thousands of handbags while others offer just a few. Ones with larger collections will make it easier for you to find just the right bag. Some of the retailers also offer larger numbers of high-end designer bags and others sell bags that are more modestly priced but still attractive and functional.
  • Site Navigation. If you are looking for a bag by a specific designer, or perhaps with a price range, size, pattern, or function in mind, the way you can search for a bag is paramount.
  • Price. As consumers, we always want to get the most bang for our buck, right? Some stores offer great deals, others do not offer discounts at all. In our search, we found bags that were a mere $11 and a few that would put you back $30,000. But, not to worry, there were also plenty of bags to be found at great prices!
  • Reputability. What is the reputation of the company? Do they sell good quality merchandise? It's important to look into what the Better Business Bureau and other consumers have to say about the company before trusting them with your financial information. Don't worry, we read LOTS of reviews to get the skinny on each of these companies to help you decide whether you should trust them or not.
  • Shipping options. How quickly do you need your bag? Are you on a strict time table? Considering the shipping speeds and subsequent costs is another crucial factor in your choice of online handbag retailer. Some stores may take up to 2 weeks to process and ship your order, while others can be picked up in store or delivered on the very day of your purchase.
  • Return Policy. If the handbag is too big, the wrong color or simply not your style, once it arrives at your doorstep, will you be able to return it without hassle for your full money back?

TopConsumerReviews has reviewed and ranked the best online handbag retailers available today. Most people carry a handbag every day, so we know how important it is to find one that does the perfect job of representing your personal style. Whether you are looking for a bag for your commute, your next vacation, or a big night out on the town, we hope this information helps you find the perfect purse, crossbody or clutch for your wardrobe.
