Cost:

Starting from $10,000 and up

Elan is a California based company that started in 1989 and are pioneers in the whole house communications market. Elan's home automation system has the capability to communicate and control just about anything in a residential setting, if you're willing to pay for it. From entertainment, lighting, music, security, convenience and more - if it exists, you'll find it at Elan.

The home automation technology used by this company is reliable, adaptable, and state of the art. Unlike many other home automation companies, Elan works well with the leading suppliers of lighting and home security systems, digital music sources, heating and cooling systems, and other home automation technology. Based on customer feedback, many people also feel that Elan is easier to program and use on a day-to-day basis than other high-end systems.

The Elan home automation system is very flexible and easy to work with. Homeowners can access their home automation with a computer, an in-wall touch screen, a TV screen interface, an iPad, iPhone, or Android device - whichever is more convenient at the time. Elan can integrate just about anything into one easy-to-access location from home or anywhere in the world.

Some of the home automation options you can enjoy with Elan include:

  • Lawn irrigation
  • Outdoor lighting
  • Pool and spa
  • Single TV remote access
  • Music in six or more areas, including whole-house audio
  • Interior and exterior real time video
  • Video recording
  • Home security
  • Motorized window shades, blinds, and drapes

The Elan website is full of information and gives customers a general idea of the costs associated with their home automation products. Starting at $10,000 for a single room, and with costs ranging up to $150,000 or more for a larger home, Elan is not for everyone. However, many customers and experts say that Elan is more cost effective than some of the other high-end home automation systems available. Elan has also received a number of industry related awards for product innovation, technology and more.

Elan distributes their home automation system in 58 different countries via dealer relationships. Customer service varies based on the location.

Elan allows their customers to automate and control just about any aspect of their home from one easy location. Flexible access, user-friendly interfaces, and a customizable system makes this a great home automation product for those that can afford it.

Cost:

Starts at $1,000 for basic setup

Typical installation is $10,000 and up

Control4, founded in 2003, has established a home automation product that allows users to control nearly any device in the home. Control4 calls themselves a life style company whose mission is to deliver an attractive and cost effective way to control and automate many features of the home. That includes music, video, energy, lighting, and security. Their flexible product architecture can be utilized in a single room and then expanded to the entire house, and is designed to work with over 7,000 consumer electronics products. We liked that Control4 provides both wired and wireless options for those that are renting, have an older home or plan on moving in the near future and want to take their system with them.

With a control panel, computer, remote control, or Smartphone anywhere in the world, Control4 brings the convenience and luxury of home automation to the homeowner. While there is a large variety of functionality you can enjoy with Control 4, here are some home automation features they can provide:

  • Automate window shades to close at sunset and open at sunrise
  • Establish lighting settings for various activities
  • Program recipes into the system making them available with one touch while cooking
  • Have home lights flash when the oven has reached optimal temperature or your food is done cooking
  • For those that like to listen to music, Control4 provides access to satellite radio and playlists to be piped throughout the house
  • Program thermostat to save money or adjust the temperature upon arrival
  • Improve home security with alerts that notify when the front or garage door have opened
  • Turn off all electronics, lights and you name it, with a single click of the button

The Control4 website provides detailed information on available equipment but, like most home automation companies, they don't go into detail on the prices. Control4 does say that they provide quality equipment at a lower price, and we were able to find some customer reviews that backed that up. A full blown Control4 home automation system is going to start at $10,000 and move up dramatically depending on the size of the home. Most Control4 products come with a two-year limited warranty should something go wrong.

Control4 is sold only through authorized dealers and the customer service levels are dependent on the location in which a customer lives. Control 4 doesn't seem to have as large of a nationwide presence as some other home automation companies, so if a dealer isn't in your area, you may be out of luck.

Control4 provides a high-tech home automation system that stands out with some customer friendly and flexible features. Those include wireless equipment options and an effort to be price competitive. Additional customer feedback we found includes user friendly programming and a responsive system. Control4 is worth a look if you have a large budget and are looking for a flexible and friendly home automation system.

Continued from above

Usually all you need is a computer or a mobile phone to easily control and monitor the many aspects of your home. Home automation can also be enhanced with a home security system to offer added security for your home and family.

There are a number of competent home automation companies that exist today. However, these home automation services can vary greatly in features offered and installation costs. Before selecting a home automation system, you should consider the following:

  • Usability. How technically savvy do you have to be to operate the home automation product? If it's too complicated, it's just not worth it.
  • Customer service. If you have a question or problem with your home automation system, will there be someone who can quickly answer your questions?
  • Guarantee. If the home automation system doesn't work, or you change your mind, can you return it for your money back?

TopConsumerReviews.com has reviewed and ranked the best Home Automation solutions available today. We hope these reviews help you find the right home automation system that you're looking for!
