Cost:

$199 Installed

Home automation devices vary in price but typically cost less than $100

Monitoring plans start at $68.99/month

Customer Information: 1-855-881-3071

Vivint is a home automation company based in North America that is dedicated to enhancing security, convenience, and energy efficiency in your home. They use a combination of award-winning customer service and smart technology in their home automation product.

Taking advantage of, and using products compatible with Z-Wave technology (a wireless home automation system that allows all your home electronics to communicate wirelessly), the Vivint Go!Control panel in your home can create a network that connects all your home's smart systems such as security, lighting, small appliances, video, HVAC, and more. The home automation system has a very competitive price at $199.00 installed, and comes with many included items:

  • Go! Control panel
  • 3 door/window sensors
  • 1 motion detector
  • 1 key fob
  • 1 smart thermostat
  • 1 lamp/small appliance control
  • 1 door lock
  • 1 video camera
  • 12 energy efficient light bulbs

For home monitoring and system access, Vivint charges a competitive monthly fee. You can anticipate paying $68.99 per month for 42 months, and you can choose to extend your plan as needed. This gives you access to controlling your whole house automation on the system management website through your computer, or via mobile apps on your Smartphone, or other mobile device.

Vivint has many other products available to create a personalized home automation system, turning the individual systems in your house into one streamlined, functional smart home. These add-on products include several different kinds and styles of controls, motion/door/window sensors, smoke/carbon monoxide alarms and even glass break sensors.

Vivint offers a lifetime warranty on all products as well as a three day trial period in the event you change your mind. If you have any questions or concerns about your system, their customer service team is top notch.

Vivint has done a good job of combining home security into a more complete home automation solution. Their quality home automation products, combined with a great history of award-winning customer service and competitive prices, make Vivint a great choice for your home automation needs.

Cost:

Starts at $1,000 for basic setup

Typical installation is $10,000 and up

Control4, founded in 2003, has established a home automation product that allows users to control nearly any device in the home. Control4 calls themselves a life style company whose mission is to deliver an attractive and cost effective way to control and automate many features of the home. That includes music, video, energy, lighting, and security. Their flexible product architecture can be utilized in a single room and then expanded to the entire house, and is designed to work with over 7,000 consumer electronics products. We liked that Control4 provides both wired and wireless options for those that are renting, have an older home or plan on moving in the near future and want to take their system with them.

With a control panel, computer, remote control, or Smartphone anywhere in the world, Control4 brings the convenience and luxury of home automation to the homeowner. While there is a large variety of functionality you can enjoy with Control 4, here are some home automation features they can provide:

  • Automate window shades to close at sunset and open at sunrise
  • Establish lighting settings for various activities
  • Program recipes into the system making them available with one touch while cooking
  • Have home lights flash when the oven has reached optimal temperature or your food is done cooking
  • For those that like to listen to music, Control4 provides access to satellite radio and playlists to be piped throughout the house
  • Program thermostat to save money or adjust the temperature upon arrival
  • Improve home security with alerts that notify when the front or garage door have opened
  • Turn off all electronics, lights and you name it, with a single click of the button

The Control4 website provides detailed information on available equipment but, like most home automation companies, they don't go into detail on the prices. Control4 does say that they provide quality equipment at a lower price, and we were able to find some customer reviews that backed that up. A full blown Control4 home automation system is going to start at $10,000 and move up dramatically depending on the size of the home. Most Control4 products come with a two-year limited warranty should something go wrong.

Control4 is sold only through authorized dealers and the customer service levels are dependent on the location in which a customer lives. Control 4 doesn't seem to have as large of a nationwide presence as some other home automation companies, so if a dealer isn't in your area, you may be out of luck.

Control4 provides a high-tech home automation system that stands out with some customer friendly and flexible features. Those include wireless equipment options and an effort to be price competitive. Additional customer feedback we found includes user friendly programming and a responsive system. Control4 is worth a look if you have a large budget and are looking for a flexible and friendly home automation system.

Continued from above

Usually all you need is a computer or a mobile phone to easily control and monitor the many aspects of your home. Home automation can also be enhanced with a home security system to offer added security for your home and family.

There are a number of competent home automation companies that exist today. However, these home automation services can vary greatly in features offered and installation costs. Before selecting a home automation system, you should consider the following:

  • Usability. How technically savvy do you have to be to operate the home automation product? If it's too complicated, it's just not worth it.
  • Customer service. If you have a question or problem with your home automation system, will there be someone who can quickly answer your questions?
  • Guarantee. If the home automation system doesn't work, or you change your mind, can you return it for your money back?

TopConsumerReviews.com has reviewed and ranked the best Home Automation solutions available today. We hope these reviews help you find the right home automation system that you're looking for!
