Cost:

From $599 to $3,795

Gracing the late-night television airwaves with celebrities Chuck Norris and Christie Brinkley since the late 90s, Total Gym is a home workout system originally designed for use in rehabilitation centers. Mr. Norris and Ms. Brinkley have been users of Total Gym for the past 30 years, recommending it as a convenient and effective way to stay in great shape despite a busy schedule.

The inclined, padded board perfectly supports the spine and the smooth gliding motion prevents strain on the joints, making it clear just why Total Gym was such a successful physical therapy tool. Total Gym creates resistance using between 6 and 60 percent of the user's body weight, which can be adjusted for varying levels of intensity. By changing the angle and position of the board, the user can target different muscle groups and perform different exercises.

Included with your purchase of a Total Gym home fitness system is a comprehensive exercise chart, a set of workout programs on DVD, and a training deck featuring the exercises possible with Total Gym and the recommended repetitions.

Weighing in at only 96 lbs, Total Gym is light, compact, and has the ability to fold up for out-of-sight storage. Three of the four available models arrive fully assembled, meaning you can begin working out within minutes of opening the box.

Total Gym offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, meaning if you're unhappy with your home gym system for any reason, Total Gym will buy it back, no questions asked. Depending on the model you purchase, warranties on the frame last 1 year, 5 years, or a lifetime.

If we have anything negative to say about them, we think that Total Gym's website could use a little improvement - the automatic scrolling feature can make trying to compare home gym models a bit frustrating, and the constant chat window pop-ups, though presumably meant to be helpful, are somewhat distracting.

Equipment overview:

  • Type of Home Gym: Resistance technology
  • Cost Range: $599 - $3,795
  • Different Models: 4
  • Financing Available: No, but payments can be made monthly or all at once
  • Weight Resistance: Ranges from 6-60% of your total body weight
  • Return Policy: 30-day trial period
  • Warranty: 1 year, 5 years, or Lifetime on frame, 6 months - 1 year on parts
  • Shipping: Free

Whether you're a senior, a stay-at-home new mom trying to get rid of some baby weight, or you're just someone who would like to tone up from the comfort of their own home, you'll love Total Gym's home gym systems. If you're a hardcore bodybuilder, though, you'd perhaps be better off looking somewhere else, as Total Gym's equipment is body weight-based and does not have extensive resistance modification capabilities.

For those in the market for an affordable, easy-to-use home fitness system, we recommend Total Gym as a great choice for a solid workout.

Cost:

From $199 to $399

Weider Health & Fitness is a company created by Ben and Joseph Weider that has been supplying customers with supplements, exercise equipment, and fitness magazines for 30 years.

With prices ranging between $199 and $399, Weider's home gym systems are much more affordable than most home gyms. Don't get too excited, though - in this case, the price does indeed reflect the quality of the equipment. Many customers complain that Weider home gyms feel flimsy and unstable due to their lightness in weight, and the pulley mechanisms do not move smoothly for most exercises.

Depending on the model, Weider home gym systems use either your body weight or a stack of non-upgradeable vinyl weight plates to create resistance. Weight resistance on any model does not exceed 214 lbs, making serious muscle building an unlikely possibility. But, if all you really need is a machine that can provide a light workout and muscle toning capabilities, Weider's home gym systems may still be worth your consideration.

While it is technically possible to return your Weider home gym system for up to 30 days after purchase, a glance at the fine print reveals that there is a whopping $250 return shipping fee, as well as a 10% restocking fee. If you needed to return the $199 Weider Ultimate Body Workout system, their policy would cause you to lose more money than you would recover.

Equipment overview:

  • Type of Home Gym: Bodyweight resistance technology and vinyl weights
  • Cost Range: $199 - $399
  • Different Models: 3
  • Financing Available: No
  • Weight Resistance: up to 214 pounds
  • Return Policy: returns possible for 30 days, but customers must pay a $250 return shipping fee and a 10% restocking fee
  • Warranty: 90 days
  • Shipping: Not included

While Weider's home gym systems seem to be adequate tools for light workouts and muscle toning, their limited 90 day warranty and expensive return fees are more than a little disappointing. We recommend you take a look at one of our higher-ranked products for a better workout and a company more invested in customer satisfaction.

If you don't know where to start, we'll break it down for you. Home gyms essentially come in two varieties: weight plate gyms, and resistance system gyms. Weight plate gyms, while more complicated, pricier, and bulkier, are better for bulking up. These home gyms come with one or more weight plate stacks that can be used to increase resistance for a tougher workout and impressive results.

Resistance gyms create tension using technology from flexible rods to magnets to simple bodyweight. One advantage of this type of resistance is that it puts less stress on tendons and joints, meaning that working out consistently with a resistance home gym can be especially beneficial to people who suffer from arthritis. These home gym systems are typically compact and perfect for those who wish to tone and sculpt their bodies.

There are a multitude of home gym brands and models available for purchase online today. When deciding which is the best fit for your personal fitness goals, there are several factors to consider:

  • Cost. How well does the brand's price range fit your budget? What level of quality will you get for what you pay?
  • Weight Resistance. What sort of weight resistance does the system use? What is its maximum weight resistance?
  • Assembly. Can this home gym be used right out of the box, or does it take days to get in working order?
  • Warranty. Does your warranty cover only the frame of your home gym system, or also parts and labor? For how long?
  • Return Policy. Are returns only possible under the condition of an expensive return fee? If you aren't happy with your home gym after 30 days, is a return even possible at all?
