Tips on DIY (Do It Yourself) Home Security

Today's technology makes it easier than ever to have a quality, reliable home security system. In fact, the wide variety of systems currently available make it easier than ever for home owners to install and monitor a multi-functional home security system. Here is a list of home security products you can install and monitor.

Wireless alarm systems: Wireless alarm systems, which don't require any holes to be drilled or wires to be run, can be installed easily. Because they take little installation, they can be a better security option as they allow for multiple monitoring points around the home.

Video cameras: Video security cameras are more affordable than ever. High quality HD video cameras can be placed inside and outside the home, allowing for full-home video monitoring. Homeowners have a choice of either having the video record to a DVR or having it feed directly to a mobile device such as a smartphone, laptop or tablet.

Mobile technology: Mobile technology such as laptops, smartphones and tablets allow for another DIY feature, self-monitoring. With a self-monitoring option, you, not a paid monitoring company, are in charge of monitoring all features of your alarm system. The alarm system notifies you when the alarm is triggered. Then, you are in charge of choosing how to respond and who to notify. Using mobile devices, you can do a variety of monitoring tasks including enabling or disabling your alarm system, receiving video feed from your home's security cameras and receiving text messages whenever your alarm has been triggered. Self-monitoring can save you in monthly monitoring fees.

Another DIY option is home automation. Home automation allows the homeowner to choose additional options with the home security system. These options can allow the homeowner to manage a variety of home systems remotely. For example, there are options to monitor and manage the thermostat, activate humidity controls, turn on/off various appliances, control lighting and control home entertainment centers. These types of options are a great addition to a security system. Be sure to research online all the home automation features available with home security systems.

In addition to security systems, you can also employ a variety of other security measures including installing security lighting or motion detector lighting at all home entrances, purchasing quality deadbolt locks on all exterior doors, using pin locks on all windows, securing the exterior garage doors and sliding doors and installing a peep hole or viewing camera at the front door. Be sure to go online and look for quality products, such as deadbolts locks, to protect your home.

To find out more about you can employ a variety of do-it-yourself home security options, go online to look for products, services and to compare prices.
