Minnesota residents may find it surprising that, on average, they are at the national average when it comes to property crimes; the chances of becoming a victim of burglary or other property crime are 1 in 41. What options are available to Minnesotans to improve their home security?
Some solutions are simple and fairly obvious. Bright exterior lights that are triggered by a motion detector can be an effective deterrent to potential criminals, as they prefer homes that can be entered without their being noticed. Similarly, bushes and other landscaping should be kept well-trimmed back from windows and doors, or not planted in the first place, so as to not offer a hiding place. Windows and doors should be closed and locked or latched when leaving the house; there are secondary devices like sliding glass door brackets and wooden dowels that can make it even more difficult to access a home through a window, and heavy-duty deadbolts and strike plates can be used to reinforce the strength and security of entry doors.
However, one of the best means of protecting a home is through a home security system. These systems will typically include window and door sensors, strobe lights and audible alarms that alert occupants and neighbors in the event of a break-in, and 24-hour monitoring. Many Minnesota home security companies offer affordable packages that include remote technology: lights can be turned on and off, thermostats changed, garage doors shut, and alarms can be armed or disarmed, all from a laptop, iPhone, or other device. This has become popular among Minnesota residents who regularly travel for business or recreation, who appreciate the peace of mind they get from being able to check on the status of their home at any time.
Even renters can make use of wireless home security systems, if their landlord does not already provide such protection to his or her tenants, as such systems can be installed easily and without needing to be connected to any existing wiring on the premises.
