Khan Academy started as a tutoring project created by an uncle tutoring his cousin, and has evolved into an 80-person non-profit organization seeking "to provide a free world-class education for anyone, anywhere". Currently used by millions of students around the globe, Khan Academy is the only Homework Help Service in our review that is not only free to use, but also covers subject matter across the full spectrum of knowledge levels - from questions such as "What is 1+1?" to differential equations.
Khan Academy's most robust subject is, as you might have guessed, mathematics. Students can study math by subject or by grade level, and the student dashboard helps them easily keep track of their progress. They can also take placement tests and "mastery challenges", to help the system learn what areas the students still need to learn and/or practice.
For every question, students can choose to watch help videos, which explain the process step-by-step, along with getting hints for how to solve the problem. Those videos are also available outside of the question area, so students can search for a topic and watch a mini-lesson just on that individual area of difficulty. And, if students have a question while watching a video, they can post their question and get help from other members of the community - although with as many users as Khan Academy has, the question may have already been asked and answered.
Parents and "coaches" (teachers, tutors, or any other type of helper/mentor) can also create accounts that are linked to the student's dashboard, giving them the ability to see exactly how their students are doing, which topics they have already covered, and which areas might need some input.
While math is definitely Khan Academy's bread-and-butter, so to speak, and has the most detailed system for tracking progress, this Homework Help Service has many other content areas as well. These areas include:
We look forward to seeing what Khan Academy adds to their repertoire in the future, especially as a result of their partnerships with NASA, MIT, The California Academy of Sciences, and The Museum of Modern Art, among others.
Because of their absolutely free access to such a wide range of subject areas, the easy-to-use student dashboard, the ability to connect with parents and/or coaches, and the helpful how-to videos, Khan Academy is our top choice for Homework Help Services.
As part of the Discovery Education network, Cosmeo helps students in grades K-12 to understand what they're studying in class and to stay engaged in learning, even during school vacations. Billed as a "homework help toolkit", Cosmeo offers:
Parents and students can search for answers by topic or even by specific textbook, ensuring that they are following the exact teaching method and goals that are being used in the classroom. Subjects covered include science, math, English, social studies, health, and even art/music.
We like that Cosmeo offers a free 30-day trial subscription, making it truly risk-free to determine if their homework help service will be useful for your child. Furthermore, a Cosmeo membership includes one parent account and up to four student accounts with their own individual logins, and all five users can be logged in simultaneously.
Parents will also appreciate Cosmeo's content controls; each child's account can be set to their grade level, making it so that only grade-appropriate content is visible on that particular account. Parents can also block individual resources and keywords.
For just $9.95/month, Cosmeo's homework help is truly reasonable, especially compared with other subscription-based services. However, one significant difference is that there is no access to live help through Cosmeo's site; if your child needs personalized homework help, you may need to consider a tutoring service in addition to your Cosmo membership.
It is also worth noting that some parents have had trouble canceling their subscriptions, either prior to the end of the free trial or after paying for their membership. We noticed that the "Contact Us" link on the main page redirects to email, with no other way to access Cosmeo's customer service department. We'd like to see a toll-free number or live chat feature, so that users can more easily obtain help with every aspect of their subscriptions.
In partnership with most of the college textbook publishers seen on today's college campuses, from McGraw Hill to Pearson and more, Chegg provides homework help through step-by-step solutions to question sets found in more than 9,000 commonly-used textbooks.
One of the highlights of using Chegg for homework help is the study app, allowing students to access textbook solutions from a tablet or mobile phone. While some reviewers have had challenges with connecting the app to their subscriber accounts, the general reaction to Chegg's app is very positive for both Apple and Android devices.
The subscription cost is reasonable at $16.95/month for the number of courses in a "typical" student course load. It is important to note that Chegg does monitor usage to prevent multiple users sharing one account, for example accessing twenty different textbooks in two weeks.
User experience appears to vary greatly. We found numerous recent complaints that, despite advertising both odd and even solutions to problems, students were only able to access one or the other for multiple courses. Also, many students were frustrated with answers that were actually incorrect, especially those provided by the "experts" for their particular topic. On the other hand, we also found many students who felt that Chegg was the best investment they made towards their educational success, that the homework help improved their grades and allowed them to understand the content matter even beyond what was taught during class lectures.
Unfortunately, there is no free trial for Chegg's study services, but one month may be enough for students to decide if the help provided will meet their needs for their current subjects. We do recommend that subscribers work proactively with Chegg; some customers have indicated that canceling one's subscription can be difficult, and that Chegg's customer service is sometimes unresponsive.
We give Chegg three stars; in order to improve their rating, we'd like to see more customer-friendly policies, maybe even a 7-day free trial, and an improvement in the ability to connect the app with the subscription for mobile users.
24 Hour Answers is a Homework Help Service that targets college-level coursework, from Anthropology to Writing and more than two dozen other subjects. Their offerings come in three main formats:
What we like about 24 Hour Answers is the pay-as-you-go format for each way they deliver homework help. Rather than having to pay for a monthly membership that you may not use, you can choose the kind of help you need and pay only for that.
The difficulty arises, however, when you try to determine exactly how much the help you need may cost - because it depends entirely on the tutor(s). In speaking with one of 24 Hour Answers' representatives, he explained that most assignments submitted to the Homework Help Center will cost at least $10, and that he has even seen assignments where students paid as much as $1,000. Even with the online tutoring, there is no set hourly rate, and each tutor determines the cost of a session based on their personal estimate for how long it will take and how much they typically charge. We were also offered a 15% discount on our first purchase from 24 Hour Answers after we asked a question using the live chat feature.
And, while the site clearly states that all help is to be used for "study and learning purposes only", we recommend that students make sure to follow their learning institutions' ethical guidelines when considering whether or not they are "getting help" vs. paying someone else to complete an entire assignment, particularly when using the 24 Hour Answers Homework Library and Homework Help Center.
Finally, it's important to note that 24 Hour Answers focuses strictly on college-level coursework, so if you're looking for help at a high school level or below, you will need to choose one of the other Homework Help Services in our review.
The Homework Center is part of Infoplease, which started as a popular radio quiz show all the way back in 1938 before evolving into an almanac and then an Internet information resource. It offers free homework help in the following subjects, geared primarily towards K-12 students:
There are also many helpful tools throughout the site, such as math flashcards, a conversion calculator, a dictionary, and a daily spelling bee. We love that all of these resources are completely free to access and use, and that all of the content is written by experts rather than users.
However, most of the information is presented strictly as text explanations, without videos, illustrations, or interactive features. Especially for younger students, this format is not likely to capture the interest or do much to help struggling learners to find answers to their homework problems.
While it is helpful to have information grouped by category or subject material, most of the homework help offered could just as easily be found by a basic Internet search. There is also no access to tutoring or any other sort of Q&A community.
Overall, we feel that the maxim "you get what you pay for" holds true for Infoplease's Homework Center: for a free resource, you shouldn't expect the same high-quality videos and searchable-by-textbook databases that you can find with other homework help services in our reviews.
Whether you're a college student working towards a degree or the parent of a school-aged child, you know that homework - and homework struggles - are inevitable. No matter if the subject is math, science, language arts or a complicated college level course, many people find it difficult to get the right help when homework challenges arise.
Today, many people are turning to Homework Help Services to work through tough assignments and find assistance with answers, especially when their teachers or professors are unavailable to lend a hand. These services can be as simple as a searchable bank of essays, answers to questions, and other resources, or as personalized as tutors available 24/7 to help create a unique presentation, research paper, or other assignment.
