A $50 Billion industry is big business. Unfortunately, that's how much fraudulent activity is charged each year stemming from identity theft. It's a big business alright; and one in which you are a potential victim.

There are a variety of ways in which data thieves can steal your personal information. They can sift through trash to find bills and credit statements; they can steal credit and debit card numbers when your card is used; they can "phish" your email and retrieve your data while posing as legitimate businesses. The list goes on and on.

Cost:

From $19.99 to $24.99 per month

Identity Guard is one of the longest-established businesses in the Identity Theft Protection industry. For over 20 years, their services have sought to protect the average consumer from any security breaches, preventing loss and restoring positive credit ratings.

Their protection plans have changed over the years, so if it’s been awhile since you’ve taken a look at what Identity Guard has to offer, consider this basic overview of their three current plans:

  • Identity Guard with Watson: for $19.99/month, you get a very comprehensive set of features, including personal risk assessment, $1 million in identity theft insurance, 3-bureau credit monitoring, and a safe browsing extension for subscribers’ computers. This plan is recommended for people who use social media at least once a week.
  • Total Protection: also for $19.99/month, this plan seems to focus more on getting quarterly updates on subscribers’ credit reports, but includes many of the same features as the previous plan, minus the Watson Artificial Intelligence component
  • Platinum: for $24.99/month, customers get all of the benefits of the Total Protection plan, with the addition of monthly credit report updates and scores from all three credit bureaus

Their most recent addition is the artificial intelligence feature known as Watson, IBM’s cognitive computing that allows Identity Guard to “personalize and customize” their protection for each customer. This AI is used to analyze users’ digital habits to look for areas of potential risk, as well as to scan news articles, social media comments, posts, and blogs in order to find any emerging threats that are pertinent to each individual customer.

We found it challenging to understand the differences between IG’s three plans. It would have been very helpful to see a chart that allows prospective clients to compare the plans at a glance, to determine which features are included. Instead, visitors to the IG site have to click back and forth among several screens, looking for which features may be different across the plans. Especially given that Identity Guard’s plans are, across the board, more expensive than most of their competitors’, we were left wondering what exactly we’d be getting when choosing among the three options.

Our biggest concern with Identity Guard is the quality of the service. We found more than a few reviews that described IG’s failure to alert users of security breaches in a timely fashion. For example, several people said they were notified of a problem either by their credit card company or by another Identity Theft company days in advance of any communication received from Identity Guard. Also, a number of customers said that it was difficult to get through to anyone at customer service when they had a problem and wanted to make sure that their information was secure.

On the other hand, Identity Guard’s Total Protection service was chosen by well-known authority Kiplinger Finance as the 2015 winner for the “Best ID Protection Service”. That kind of endorsement merits consideration.

In order to give Identity Guard a more ringing endorsement, we’d like to see more clarity in what each plan offers to their customers. We’d also like to see an upward trend in customer satisfaction, especially with respect to timely notification of any security threats. With such an extensive history within the identity theft protection field, Identity Guard should be able to make those changes and once again establish themselves as a top authority.

Once they have your data, it doesn't take long for them to wreak havoc. For example, they can drain your bank and checking accounts. Or, they can open new loans for cars and other big ticket items. They can even charge your accounts for vacations, home furnishings, and surgical procedures such as Liposuction and plastic surgery.

And after you realize you're a victim, it can take months or even years to straighten out the mess.

While no one can guarantee that your personal information will never be stolen, Identity Theft Protection services work to make sure that this information can not be used to bring you harm.

There are a number of features you'll want to consider when looking for an Identity Theft Protection service. Some of these include:

  • Services offered.  Some companies provide extensive protection and monitoring services; others provide just basic reporting.
  • Cost.  The cost for these services can vary widely. You want to be sure you're getting good value for your dollar.
  • Guarantee.  Some services provide no guarantee of protection; others provide up to $1 million worth of coverage.
