Identity Theft in Colorado

Colorado MapColorado ranks ninth-highest in America when considering identity theft, with an average of 95 cases reported for every 100,000 residents. For the nearly 5,000 individuals who reported identity theft in a recent year, their lives were deeply affected by this crime that is becoming more prevalent in the nation as a whole.

One newer form of identity theft is tax-related, as thieves use stolen social security numbers to file a tax return and claim a fraudulent refund. Residents are often unaware of this victimization until they attempt to file their tax return and find that another was already filed earlier using their SSN. The IRS recently published a list of warning signs for tax-related identity theft, such as IRS records indicating that wages were received from an employer not recognized by the individual; receiving an IRS notice that multiple tax returns were filed with a specific SSN; or taxpayers are notified that they owe additional tax or have had collection actions taken against them for a year in which they did not file a return.

For Colorado residents who suspect that they have experienced identity theft, it is suggested that they file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, file a report with the local police department, contact one of the three primary credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) to establish a fraud alert on their accounts, and to close any accounts that were opened fraudulently. In addition, people in Colorado who suspect that they have been a victim of tax-related identity theft should respond immediately to any IRS notice received by mail, as well as complete the Identity Theft Affidavit provided online at IRS.gov.

Finally, Identity Theft Protection services can be purchased through a number of reputable companies, to help individuals in Colorado not only prevent identity theft but also to manage the necessary measures if such a crime should come to impact their lives.
