Identity Theft in Florida

Florida MapWere you aware that, as a Floridian, you are at the highest risk in the nation for becoming a victim of identity theft? In a recent year, more than 37,000 residents reported to the Federal Trade Commission that they had experienced identity theft, representing a rate of 186.3 complaints for every 100,000 individuals in Florida. These numbers are no anomaly, as the state has been in the top 3 for reported identity theft for several years in a row.

What can you do to better protect yourself from identity theft in Florida? One of the best lines of defense is to work with a reputable Identity Theft Protection service. These services offer 24-hour monitoring of your personal information and will notify you of any suspected fraudulent activity using your name, address, social security number or other account information. In the event of any form of identity theft, these companies will work to restore your identity and credit history.

In addition, there are many things that the average Floridian may not already be doing that would help them to safeguard their identity and protect against theft. Do you regularly carry your Social Security card in your wallet or purse? Do you provide your SSN whenever asked for it by a business or doctor's office? If so, stop! Both of these are easy ways for identity thieves to obtain one of the most useful pieces of information for criminal purposes. Also, make sure that you do not provide detailed personal information to phone callers; a recently-discovered scam involved callers pretending to be from the IRS and asking for information from whomever answered their call. Be aware that most governmental agencies will send any notifications by mail, and only disclose your information on a call that you initiate to a trusted number.

In these ways, you are less likely to experience the costly crime of identity theft in Florida and better able to have peace of mind, knowing that your personal information is safe.
