Identity Theft in Ohio

Ohio MapOhio ranks 29th highest in the nation when considering statistics surrounding identity theft, at a rate of 65.2 cases for every 100,000 people in the population, or more than 7,500 reports made to the Federal Trade Commission in a recent year.

Identity Theft Protection services are available to Ohioans looking to better safeguard against such an invasion of their security and privacy. These services offer 24-hour monitoring of social security numbers, credit accounts and bank numbers, and other personal information, detecting any likely unauthorized activity and putting an end to it before it escalates into a bigger issue. This saves customers time, money, and heartache, as many cases of identity theft go undiscovered until victims attempt to open a new credit card or apply for a mortgage, for example; it can take years to restore the good name and credit rating of a victim of identity theft.

However, residents of Ohio should also be wise when it comes to securing their personal information and preventing identity thieves from wreaking havoc in their lives. For instance, choosing to use hard-to-guess passwords makes it more difficult for criminals to access bank accounts and other sensitive information; these passwords should be used not only with online accounts but also to access laptops, smartphones, and other devices. It is recommended that any outgoing mail be taken directly to the post office or deposited in a secure collection box, rather than being left in a curbside mailbox at home.

Similarly, when ordering new bank checks, it is best to have them delivered to a location other than home. Finally, keeping social security numbers secure is one of the best ways to prevent thieves from getting their most valuable pieces of information; this can be done by only giving it out when strictly necessary, not just when requested, and by leaving social security cards in a safe place at home instead of in a purse or wallet.

In this manner, the majority of Ohioans can make it much less likely that identity theft will ever become an issue in their lives.
