Wyoming MapAt a rate of 49.2 cases reported for every 100,000 residents, Wyoming ranks 37th highest in the nation with respect to identity theft. This type of crime is becoming more prevalent as criminals steal personal information to file false tax returns with the IRS and walk away with taxpayers' refunds; to gain access to medical care, from routine illnesses to expensive elective procedures; to purchase clothing, jewelry, cars, and homes; and to drain savings and checking accounts, among other things.

Identity Theft Protection services are available for Wyoming residents who would like an added layer of security by having their personal information safeguarded around the clock. Such services can detect any suspicious activity using clients' identities and block it before it escalates into a bigger issue. Because many cases of identity theft go unnoticed for long periods of time, customers appreciate knowing that they will be aware of any attempts to steal their personal information almost as soon as they occur.

Additionally, other precautions can be taken to make it less likely for personal information to fall into the hands of criminals. Passwords should be used to protect laptops, cellphones, and other devices, so that any sensitive information stored there will be more difficult for thieves to access when stolen. Also, all passwords for devices and for online accounts should never use words that are in the dictionary, birth dates, or phone numbers, but rather should be comprised of a string of numbers and letters (and symbols, when possible) that are meaningful to the user but difficult for others to guess. Finally, social security numbers should only be given out when absolutely necessary; Wyoming residents should feel free to ask anyone requesting to explain how it will be used, why it is required, and how that information will be protected in that office or business.

In these ways, people in Wyoming can better protect themselves against becoming victims of identity theft.
