Monster is the largest job search service in our review. Many people have found success landing a new job with Monster. Since job hunting is partly a numbers game (the more jobs you apply to, the greater your chances of landing a job), Monster has an advantage over its competitors.
From the home page you have access to many facilities. For example, you can conduct your job search, get assistance in writing your resume, find a degree program, and even participate in an opinion poll. Creating an account (called My Monster) is free. Once created, Monster offers you a wide variety of services to assist in your job search; you can have multiple resumes on file, access application history, keep contacts, access letters and questionnaires, use a message center, and a host of other features. In addition, you can save jobs (useful for bookmarking interesting positions), use job search agents, and post your resume.
Some of the most impressive features of Monster are found in the Marketplace and Career Advice pages. The amount of information and tips here are staggering. They include job interview and cover letter tips, salary comparisons, 401k rollover information, job profiles, and a self-assessment center. Monster also provides career advice for 23 different areas, access to job search blogs, and the opportunity to be kept up to date with new information through an RSS feed or traditional newsletter. You name it, Monster's got it. It really is the one-stop shop for finding employment.
Monster's FAQ page is very thorough but can be hard to find. Should you need additional help, the contact link is on the bottom tool bar. Customer service is available in 3 ways - live chat, email or telephone. All are available 24/7.
Monster has the largest number of available jobs to choose from, and provides a wealth of helpful job search and career information. For these reasons, Monster earns our highest rating.
Resume Rabbit is an ingenious tool created to assist you in your job search. By filling out one simple form, this site will post your resume to over 75 job posting sites; 47 general sites and 30 specialty sites including information technology, accounting, sales/marketing and diversity (complete list of submitted sites here). Just a sampling of these sites include such well-known services as Monster, Career Builder, Job, Dice (for IT professionals), and Salesjobs.
In addition to submitting your resume to all these job sites, Resume Rabbit provides you with a real-time resume posting report that gives you information on where your resume is in the cycle at each career site. You can post your resume "confidentially" - a helpful feature that eliminates personal information from being seen by your current employer. Resume Rabbit also safeguards your information and does not sell to third parties.
Once your information has been posted by Resume Rabbit to the various sites, you are then given the username and password of each site and can edit and update your information as needed. Resumes are posted within 72 hours where over 1.5 million employers can view your information. The Ladders is the best executive level job search site available. They post over 25,000 jobs every month of only $100K+ jobs.
The site is professional and very easy to navigate. Members are able to search by various "ladders" or industries including finance, management, law, medical, consulting, marketing, operations, human resources, real estate, sale, science and technology. The help link is very informative and answers most if not all possible questions you might have. There is also a 2 minute video link about the benefits they provide.
The Ladders offers two types of services: a basic service for free, or a premium service for $30 a month (discounts available for 6- and 12-month subscriptions). The basic service lets you view jobs and create a bio (which they use instead of a resume). Your bio is then posted online, and you are available to be contacted by potential employers. The premium service allows you to apply for any job on their network, connect with recruiters, save searches and offers professional advice on resumes, networking, interviewing and more.
Why does The Ladders charge a fee for the ability to apply for specific jobs, when most job search sites provide this for free? Simple - many employers do not post high-end jobs on traditional job search sites. They are usually flooded with applications from unqualified candidates. Snag A Job offers a number of options to make the job search process easier. Career Builder is another free site that allows you to search and post your resume. Unlike the competition, Career Builder really does a great job providing valuable information without the overwhelming commercialization.
Career Builder sets itself apart from the competition by offering both the traditional search functions and also a "job recommendation engine". This service remembers your searches, scans your resume, and collects details from jobs you've applied to, in order to automatically deliver job recommendations to you. They also have a specialized job search engine that includes offerings like part time, diversity, college, contract-for-hire, franchise opportunities, and nonprofit organizations. They even offer an "en espanol" search engine.
Even though you could easily find a new job with the extensive search functions for free, Career Builder also offers some upgrade options that can be purchased if interested. There is a charge if you elect to upgrade your resume ($20-$150) or distribute your resume to recruiters (starting at $59.99).
You can also sign up for job alerts, a job seeker toolkit, a job search newsletter, and information on local career fairs in your area. The advice and resource section of this site has a wealth of information from assessments to working at home and relocation services.
For delivering a large number of available jobs, and providing a good source of career information without the commercialization and advertising, Career Builder earns good marks.
Formerly known as Beyond and rebranded as Nexxt in 2017, this job search service hopes to connect you with the exact job you're looking for. Although Nexxt doesn't currently publish the total number of jobs listed, there were over a million listings under its former name Beyond, making it a reasonable guess for what's available under the new name.
Nexxt allows job-hunters to focus their search by career, metro area, and diversity eligibility. On their main page, you'll want to take a look in the drop-down menus beneath their four Focus categories: Career, Local, Diversity, and Global.
For example, the Career Focus sites offered by Nexxt include Customer Service, Entertainment Workers, and Healthcare, while the Diversity category targets groups like Veterans and Armed Services, African- and Asian-Americans, and LGBT individuals. Selecting any one of those options will take you to a separate website with job listings focused strictly on that category.
Not sure if you're ready to sign up for a free account with Nexxt? No problem. You can easily search by Job Title or keyword and location right at the top of the page. Click on any job that interests you - you'll get a pop-up asking if you'd like to subscribe to alerts about this job or about other similar positions, but it's not required. We think many job-seekers will appreciate being able to see and apply for jobs without having to enter their personal information first.
When you enter your email for those job alerts, Nexxt will create an account for you with a temporary password, as well as a Career Portfolio. This portfolio is the basis of the focused services Nexxt offers and is similar to what you'd have in a traditional resume. Taking the time to fill in your details - name, work history, professional awards and accreditations, and so forth - is critical if you want Nexxt to be able to send recruiters and employers your way.
Nexxt does have a Premium Membership option. For $24.99/month, your application will be listed as a "Featured Applicant" with any job you apply for that was posted by a Nexxt member agency or employer. Also, when employers search for applicants with your qualifications, your resume will be highlighted at the top of the search results. Finally, you'll have access to more than 200,000 jobs posted on Twitter. We're not sure that this gives you much bang for your buck, so we recommend that you try all of the free features on Nexxt before committing to the paid plan.
In general, Nexxt offers a solid array of job opportunities to those seeking employment without a hefty financial commitment to access them. While we weren't overly impressed with the site layout or the user interface, Nexxt definitely can hold its own with most of the competitor job search sites in our review.
Resume Zapper is a service that instantly sends your resume to thousands of recruiters. The site is easy to use. You select the industry or industries that you want to target and the geographical areas you want to focus on; their database finds the appropriate matches and posts your resume to the proper recruiters.
To make the matches most effective, they have over 450 industries for you to select from. You can easily view these industries and the number of recruiters they have available for each one. For example, they have over 4,000 recruiters specializing in computer programming, over 2,000 recruiters for accounting positions, and over 1,900 recruiters focusing on sales management. They even have over 1500 recruiters that specialize in international markets.
The site is easy to use and includes an FAQ section with very detailed information. Membership is $49.99; for this fee, your resume and cover letter is distributed to 600 general recruiters as well as every recruiter that matches your choice of 3 industry and geographic filter selections. Optional services include receiving a list of recruiters who have received your resume ($15), additional industries ($19.99 for 3), a confidential email box ($10), and an option to re-distribute your resume to new recruiters after 30 days ($29.99).
We wish Resume Zapper provided additional useful tools on their website. For example, assistance in resume writing, templates, and advice would be helpful. Also, we'd like to be able to submit to more than 3 industries with our basic membership plan.
Still, Resume Zapper does a great job in connecting job seekers with thousands of job recruiters searching for candidates. If you're serious about your job search, Resume Zapper is a valuable and effective tool in landing your next job.
Along the lines of Monster, Job provides a wide range of jobs to the prospective job hunter. Their interface is clean and simple to use.
When searching for a job, you first select a category from over 60 that are listed. You can then select either a state, or a major city within a state. You can optionally add keywords to further refine your search.
Because of the arrangement of the information on the screen, we sometimes found it difficult to understand what was an advertisement, and what was a part of the Job facility. For example, more than once we clicked on a link to a feature we wanted to try, only to be taken to a completely different job search engine. Also, they currently don't support automated search agents; which means, every time you want to search for available jobs that match certain criteria, you must return to the website. Our other top-ranked services provide this functionality in the form of an email notification to automatically keep you informed.
One other point that we found annoying occurred after initial signup to the system. You are automatically enrolled in a number of newsletters when you signup, without being asked. You can opt-out of these newsletters via their Newsletter Subscription Manager, but nonetheless we would have liked to be notified before we started receiving the newsletters in the first place.
Overall, posting your resume to Job can't hurt, as they have over 1,000 employers and recruiters who visit the site. However, the limitations mentioned above compel us to recommend our top-ranked sites first.

Some interviewers have to look at hundreds of resumes for one specific position. They do not have a lot of time to spend on the resume process. They need to decide quickly, whom to bring in for the interviewing process. Remember the sole purpose of a resume is to get invited for an interview. Therefore, a resume is often described as a teaser. It should be just interesting enough, that the interviewer wants to get to know you more.
There are some basic dos and don'ts in writing a resume. A resume should include only relevant information to the job position. It should not include personal information such as hobbies or previous salaries. It should also be a page in length. If you must, two pages maximum. Though, it should be noted that some individuals will immediately put a resume that is over one page in length in the reject pile and often times the interviewer will have already made up their mind while reading the first page anyhow.
A good resume needs to be specific and have a job objective. An example of a weak objective would be "Applying for a manager position". An example of a specific objective would be "Applying for senior tax consulting manager at NAME OF COMPANY". Interviewers also love to see hard facts and data in a resume. Another important point in writing a good resume is to keep contact information professional. Often time's individuals will set up a new e-mail address for the specific purpose of job hunting. Remember to keep you e-mail address simple. An interviewer might not take you seriously if your e-mail is lovefishing@… or motherofsix@…. Never give your current work telephone number as a point of contact. First, it is unprofessional and second, if they should call you don't want to be busy doing something else that you can't talk. Lastly, a good resume is well organized and attractive looking. A good resume will have a neutral colored quality paper and matching professional envelope.
