Lamps not only bring greater illumination to an office, living room, or bedroom, but they can also be a unique piece in your modern-day decor. From small desk lamps ideal for college students to ornate floor lamps used to make a bold statement, thereís a wide variety to choose from when looking for that additional lighting in a room.

However, if youíre looking for something specific, stores specializing in lamps are not often found. Customers are usually limited to the lackluster options found at their local hardware store or big-box retailer. Fortunately, with just a click of a mouse, shoppers can find thousands of lamps online - from functional to fancy to fabulous.

1 Stop Lighting has several unique features designed to grab your attention as you shop for your next lamp. Their loyalty and referral program will encourage your return business and word-of-mouth, and with 50+ brands representing more than 6,000 lamps in-stock, there is definitely a lamp for every shopper.

And, 1 Stop Lighting will price match "almost everything". Certain exclusions apply, such as lamps sold by big-box stores and items sold by competitors during special event sales, but for most items they will match any price within 14 days of purchase. We did see that on several lamps, their "on special" price was higher than certain competitors' everyday pricing, so customers will want to do some research and take advantage of that price match guarantee when possible.

Shipping on orders over $49 is always free, and many lamps have a one-week (or less!) delivery guarantee; 1 Stop Lighting returns a portion of your order total if your delivery isn't delivered on time. 1 Stop Lighting provides customer service representatives for up to fifteen hours a day via their toll-free number or online chat, unlike most of their competitors who are only available to help during the standard 8-hour business day.

1 Stop Lighting has a 30-day return policy, and customers should note that they are obligated by certain manufacturers to charge a 20% restocking fee for all non-defective returns. That list of manufacturers is quickly found on their website.

We did find a surprising number of customer reviews that expressed dissatisfaction with items received, particularly for items that looked significantly different from what was pictured on the site. Shoppers should be aware that, like many online retailers across many categories, 1 Stop Lighting is a "drop shipper"; in other words, they do not carry inventory themselves but instead they send orders to manufacturers and other third parties who then ship the lamps. If you prefer a lamp store that either carries its own inventory or has a retail location, you might want to consider another retailer in our review. Other reviews described hassles with getting returns accepted, even on items that were shipped in error.

On a positive note, 1 Stop Lighting maintains an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, and there are also customer reviews saying that the products were exactly as pictured and at a lower price than any other store online. We would gladly increase our rating with reviews indicating improved customer satisfaction.

RLA LIGHTING

Based out of the East Coast, RLA Lighting strives to provide excellent customer service and an easy shopping experience.

Using RLA Lighting's site to find your next lamp may be somewhat time-consuming. Their available products can be narrowed down by lamp type (such as table or torchiere), but once you're on the category page you can only limit the options by finish and type of glass or crystal (if any). It would be more helpful to be able to filter the available products by price, height/width, and so on.

We also found prices at RLA Lighting to be higher than other retailers' on almost every product we selected. Unfortunately, they do not offer a price match guarantee, and there was no pop-up or other discount readily listed on the site to help make their prices more competitive with other sellers. They do offer a "Deal of the Day", featured on the upper left-hand side of the page; customers need to call the toll-free number to find out what the item is and the price.

Shipping costs, on the other hand, are better than some of the lamp retailers in our review: free for all orders over $49. RLA Lighting does not ship to Hawaii, Alaska, or to P.O. boxes. With respect to returns, RLA accepts them within 30 days of purchase but does charge a restocking fee of 25% on most products (Livex, Elk, Cornerstone, Sterling, and Nuvo items are the only exceptions).

One positive aspect of RLA Lighting is that they are the only lamp retailer we reviewed that is not only accredited by the Better Business Bureau with an A+ rating, but also has zero registered customer complaints. We also found a number of positive reviews on other sites that said that shoppers were pleased with the products and the customer service they received.

We recognize that RLA Lighting has an excellent reputation with the BBB and low-cost shipping, and would gladly increase that rating with evidence of lower prices and a more intuitive way of sorting through the lamps that they have available.

Continued from above

Online retailers of lamps often have prices that easily meet or beat what can be found in local brick-and-mortar stores, because they donít have the same overhead costs of most retail stores. Finding your next lamp online can save you time and money while bringing you the exact product you want, instead of settling for whatever may be available nearby.

What should you look for when buying lamps online? As you consider the various retailers on the market, keep the following in mind:

  • Selection. Does the store give you many different styles, brands, and price points to choose from?
  • Pricing. Is the retailer competitive with other stores? What is the typical cost of shipping?
  • Return Policy. If you need to return your lamp for some reason, will you be able to do so? Does the store charge a restocking fee?
  • Customer Service. How easily can you connect with a representative if you have questions before or after your order? Does the retailer have a good reputation for customer service with previous customers?
