Best Maternity Clothing Stores

If you've ever been in the market for maternity clothes you know it can be a disappointing adventure to say the least. Many of the large chain stores provide a very limited selection of maternity clothes that most women wouldn't leave their house in - let alone spending money for. While your body grows you deserve to look your best, feel comfortable, and be confident in yourself.

In recent years, online internet shopping has become an excellent way to resolve the frustrating maternity clothes debacle. Many women have turned to online specialty maternity stores and found attractive maternity clothes that allow them to feel beautiful and maintain their dignity without spending a fortune.

Destination Maternity

DESTINATION MATERNITY Visit Site

Cost:

From $20 to $80+

TopConsumerReviews.com Best-In-Class Blue Ribbon Award Destination Maternity features a wide selection of fashionable, cute, maternity clothes for the mom-to-be. There is variety of both classic and modern pieces to choose from at Destination Maternity. This store carries almost any maternity clothing item you might need during pregnancy and nursing such as tops, bottoms, dresses, business suits, lingerie, sleepwear, swim, active and outwear. Plus sizes are also available.

Destination Maternity pants feature the unique Secret Fit Belly. The fabric is seamless and smoothes the appearance of the belly and belly button. The fabric is also light and breathable, making it very comfortable to wear. The store carries clothing from well-known designers such as A Pea in the Pod, Nicole Richie, Lucky Brand, True Religion, MOTHERHOOD, and many more. These are respectable brands with products that will remain in excellent condition for many years.

We also liked that Destination Maternity carries NFL T-Shirts. This option wasn't available in any of the other stores in our review. If you (or your partner) are a die-hard NFL fan, you can still support your team!

The prices are very reasonable for the high quality of maternity clothes. The majority of the clothing is listed for around $20-30. Suits and outerwear were understandably more expensive, ranging from $50-$300. Destination Maternity also had some sale items for as low as $6.99.

We liked that there is a low standard shipping fee on every order. This is nice to know upfront and you won't be surprised with expensive shipping costs when you place an order. If you're in a rush, there are options for faster shipping as well. If you would like to return or exchange a product, you can do so by mail or even in a local Destination Maternity store.

Destination Maternity has the largest selection of all the stores in our review. With great brands and reasonable prices, you are sure to find what you are looking for within your budget. We definitely recommend Destination Maternity, and they've earned our highest rating.

Gap Maternity

GAP MATERNITY Visit Site

Cost:

From $20 to $70+

Gap Maternity has a classic look with all the basics within each clothing category (tops, bottoms, dresses, jeans etc.) Each piece is typically designed to mix and match with multiple outfits. At Gap Maternity, you can buy less items and still make more outfits. The large majority of the clothing is solid colors with a few prints.

Gap's Maternity clothing is designed to last and stay in style. There is not as much variety outside of basic wardrobe pieces. Clothing range in price, the majority between $20-$70 depending on what you are shopping for. There is also a section for sale items. Gap Maternity's website is divided into sections to help you shop and buy what you need. Some of the special sections we found really helpful included:

  • Work essentials - gives you examples to help create outfits for work. There are examples of what matches and goes together.
  • Starter styles - items to start your maternity wardrobe that will last and be in style for years.
  • Baby Shower - suggestions for cute outfits to wear to your baby shower.
  • Trip to the hospital - they have thought of everything you need. From socks, to baby blankets, to car seats to going home outfits for mom and baby.

Along with the basic clothing items, Gap Maternity also has tops, dresses and undergarments for nursing mothers. Gap Maternity also has items to purchase for baby, such as clothes, nursery bedding, feeding baby gear, diaper bags etc. It is fun to shop for mom and baby at the same time.

One nice feature of Gap's website is that it allows you to purchase women's, maternity men's and children's Gap clothes together, but also purchase anything from Old Navy, Banana Republic, Piperlime and Athena. This gives you more options when ordering and may help save on shipping and handling costs by bundling your order. There is also free shipping on your Gap Maternity purchases when you purchase shoes from Piperlime or if you have a company credit card.

We like Gap for the longevity of clothing, both in quality and style. if you are looking for clothing with prints and a unique style, Gap Maternity is not for you. However, if you are looking to build your wardrobe with pieces that will last, we highly recommend shopping at Gap.

Figure 8 Maternity

FIGURE 8 MATERNITY Visit Site

Cost:

From $25 to $150+

Figure 8 is a great option for stylish, flattering maternity clothes. They offer maternity, nursing and post-partum clothes as well as a wide selection of baby clothes, cloth diapers, and baby gear. The maternity clothes selection offers everything from a basic tank to a formal dress for a special occasion and a professional suit for the working woman. Their selection includes clothes from maternity designers like Japanese Weekend, Olian, Ripe, Maternal America, and more.

The website is easy to navigate, with the clothes arranged by style and also by collection. A nice feature is you can search by specific size or a size range allowing you to only view the clothes that fit you. Besides tops, bottoms and dresses, Figure 8 also offers professional suits, swim suits, workout clothes, lounge ware and some great post baby body slimmer and shape ware as most women need a little support as they return to pre-baby body.

Figure 8 currently provides Free Ground Shipping on all orders. Many other companies reviewed have a high dollar amount for your orders to receive Free Shipping. Returns (including clearance items) may be completed within 30 days for a full refund or within 60 days for store credit / exchanges. Final Sale items are not returnable.

Figure 8 is more expensive than some of the companies ranked higher, but they have a unique selection of maternity clothes that allow the expecting mother to look fashionable and confident. If you are willing to spend a little more, Figure 8ís selection, customer service and reputation makes them worth a look.

Old Navy

OLD NAVY Visit Site

Cost:

Starting from $30

If you are looking for maternity clothes on a tight Budget, we recommend Old Navy. All their items were $30 or less - including jeans, pants, tops, and sweaters. The maternity sizes range from XS-XXL. The clothing is very similar in style and quality to Women's Old Navy clothing that many of us are familiar with.

Clothing styles are seasonal and change frequently. New items are added often. The website is organized to help you select the clothes you need. This can be especially helpful for a mom-to-be without any maternity clothing. One section we found especially helpful features the "must-have basics" that you need to build your maternity wardrobe.

Old Navy is best known for their jeans. The maternity jeans come in four styles:

  • Real waist with adjustable waistband - best for the first 6 months of pregnancy
  • Low rise with elasticized waist - good for all 9 months
  • Full panel to sit overbelly - best for the 2nd and 3rd Trimester
  • Roll panel option to roll over belly or roll under - perfect to wear throughout

Old Navy has many types of maternity clothing. They have different styles of tops, pants, jackets, dresses, work and outerwear. They do not have any business suit options. Since the clothing is seasonal, you will not be able to find heavy sweaters in the summer and sleeveless tops in the winter.

One nice feature of Old Navy's website is that it allows you to purchase women's, maternity men's and children's Old Navy clothes together, but also purchase anything from Gap, Banana Republic, Piperlime and Athena. This gives you more options when ordering and may help save on shipping and handling costs by bundling your order. There is also free shipping on your Old Navy Maternity purchases when you purchase shoes from Piperlime or if you have a company credit card.

Old Navy's clothing generally is not the best for longevity. It is common for the thread to unravel, especially with tops. It also tends to fade and look worn faster than other brands. This may not be a problem if you plan to wear the item only temporarily. If you are looking for maternity clothes to last through multiple pregnancies, we suggest looking elsewhere. The maternity clothing from Old Navy is consistent with the quality that many of us expect from Old Navy. It is fashionable, affordable, but tends to be made with lower quality.

However, we really liked the variety and quality of Old Navy jeans. If you are an Old Navy fan, or are more concerned with lower prices, the Maternity section of Old Navy will meet your expectations. Just don't expect for all your items to hold up for more than a year.

Isabella Oliver

ISABELLA OLIVER Visit Site

Cost:

From $100 to $500+

Isabella Oliver's maternity clothes are a modern version of a classic style and are made to fit all trimesters. Their clothing lines have been featured in many popular fashion magazines such as Vogue and Instyle. Celebrities Gwen Stefani and Minnie Driver wore Isabella Oliver Maternity items during their pregnancy.

The large majority of clothing is solid color, primarily in black, white and gray. There are wrap tops, dresses, pants, skirts, coats, swim wear and lingerie to choose from. The clothing is extremely tight and form fitting and may not be for some women who may be self-conscious during this stage of life.

Isabella Oliver's Marilyn boot cut jeans offer a stage by stage stretch on the waistband, stretch denim, and fine detailing. These jeans are perfect as a pregnant woman's body continually changes throughout the entire pregnancy.

Isabella Oliver makes it easy to shop online. There is the option to filter items based on color, popularity and price. If you are not satisfied with an item, you must return it within 30 days. Isabella Oliver will pay for the return shipping on the first item exchange. Not very many companies offer this.

One nice feature is that you can request a catalog to be sent. This is great for people who would prefer a hard copy opposed to browsing online. The site also allows you to sign up for e-newsletters that features sale items. There is also a widget to download on your computer that features maternity fashion tips, a blog and an article on maternity fashion no-no's.

Isabella Oliver is the most expensive maternity clothing featured in our review. For the short length of time that most women wear these items, it may not be worth it to purchase clothing from here. Many of the clothes are too tight for the average pregnant woman and are rather plain in style, not featuring the variety offered through other maternity clothing companies. However, you can expect a high quality item.

We suggest splurging on a couple of must-have Isabella Oliver items that you want to last and shopping elsewhere for everyday clothes.

Continued from above

However, not all maternity clothing stores are the same. There are wide varieties of fashion and design, prices and refund policies. It's important to find maternity clothes that you like, but that doesn't cost a fortune given the short term nature of the need.

Before you purchase maternity clothes online, you should consider the following important elements:

  • Selection. Does the website have only a limited selection of maternity clothes, or is there an abundance of clothing options?
  • Price. How do the prices compare to other maternity clothes stores? Do the prices work within your budget?
  • Return policy. Once the maternity clothes arrive, how long do you have to return them if they don't fit - or you simply don't like them?
