Who has the best Mobility Scooters? For those with difficulties getting around at home or in public, mobility scooters are the most popular way of helping them stay active and engaged in life. From simplifying shopping trips to making it possible to get safely from one room to another, mobility scooters make it possible to stay independent even when users are managing difficult health conditions that affect their mobility.

When deciding which mobility scooter is right for you or for a loved one, the first consideration is what it will be used for. For example, the type of scooter you'd buy for someone who will use it primarily indoors is vastly different from what would be necessary for long trips outside. Another factor to consider is weight and portability: will you need to be able to lift it into a van or other vehicle for transport?

TopConsumerReviews.com Best-In-Class Blue Ribbon Award Not many mobility scooter stores are created and owned by someone who actually uses one on a regular basis. Enter Go Mobility Scooters, started by friends Jeff and Eric; when Jeff used a mobility scooter for the first time, he felt a freedom and joy that he'd never experienced. The pair translated that experience into a mission of helping "as many people as possible go where they want to go and continue living the lifestyle they deserve."

Go Mobility helps make this possible by offering free shipping on everything they sell, from the lowest-priced scooter to the most expensive. They also offer a Lowest Price Guarantee: just call their toll-free number or fill out their online form, and they'll contact you within 24 hours with a better price. Finally, Go Mobility has a generous return policy; all scooters can be returned within 30 days of delivery, as long as it's in original packaging, with no damage, scratches, and so on. You will have to pay a 15% restocking fee, which is in line with the other stores that allow returns.

Most of the mobility scooter sites we reviewed expect that you're starting with an idea of the basic model you need. What if you don't? We think Go Mobility does a fantastic job of helping you figure it out. On their main scooter categories page, you can see an example of each type, along with a short summary of key characteristics. For example, they say that a 4-wheel travel scooter can typically carry users up to 325 lbs., are generally recommended for users under 5'10" and have a slightly bigger turning radius which makes them more difficult to use indoors.

You'll find that kind of detail for these categories:

  • 3-Wheel Travel Scooters
  • 4-Wheel Travel Scooters
  • Heavy Duty Wheel Scooters
  • Folding Scooters
  • Pre-Mobility Scooters
  • Standing Scooters
  • Enclosed Cabin Scooters
  • Travel/Portable
  • In Home Use
  • Indoor/Outdoor Use
  • Outdoor Use

Featured brands on the Go Mobility site are Invacare, Pride, EV Rider, Drive Medical, and FreeRider.

Once you've narrowed down the choices, you'll find clear, detailed information on the scooter's page. Make sure to click through the tabs toward the bottom; you'll see specifications, the owner's manual, videos, and any warranty information.

If there are any options, you'll see them when you click on the "Customize and Buy" button. All scooters come with a free charger and 12 A/H batteries, but you may be able to upgrade to an 18 A/H battery. You can also opt into an extended warranty; most of the scooters we looked at came with a complimentary 1-year, "No Worries Service Contract" that provides you with a technician visit for any problems that arise. Just make sure to read the manufacturer warranty details too, because that's how any required replacement parts are covered.

Go Mobility has an unparalleled reputation among mobility scooter stores. They're accredited with the Better Business Bureau and maintain an "A+" rating there, with only two customer complaints filed - and those were handled very courteously by Go Mobility representatives. We also encourage you to click on the blue Reviews button on the left side of the Go Mobility Scooters website, to see their most current customer comments. We were very pleased to see so many positive remarks, especially after people had a chance to use the scooters for a while and get help if there were any issues. Post-order customer service can be the Achilles' heel for many scooter companies, so it was refreshing to see that thus far, Go Mobility has been handling that very well.

In every aspect of the purchase experience, from getting the information you need to make a decision, to getting the best possible price, and then having access to knowledgeable, responsive representatives, this store is everything you could want. For all of these reasons, Go Mobility is our first choice for mobility scooters. They earn our highest rating.

Colonial Medical is one of just a handful of companies that actually maintains a warehouse of medical equipment. In business since 1984, the company currently has an A+ with the BBB and is a name to trust when deciding where to buy a mobility scooter or other medical equipment.

The online store is fairly basic. When looking at scooters, you can sort by price, name, or rating. The site doesn't make it easy to go directly to the types of scooters you want, such as 3- or 4-wheel models, so be prepared to spend some time looking for the right one out of the 22 mobility scooters they carry.

When you click on a scooter, you'll be able to see at a glance what to expect in terms of options, specifications, and price. Almost all of the scooters ship for free, and all of the ones we considered came with a lifetime warranty. We would like to see Colonial Medical provide more details on that warranty: does it come with in-house repairs or any other features?

It's also important to note that mobility scooters are strictly non-returnable, unless it is received as defective or damaged in some way. You would need to contact Colonial Medical's customer service department right away if that's the case.

Although we found a few complaints about ordering issues, most of those were several years old. This makes us think that part of the reason this store has such a solid rating with the BBB is because they've made improvements over the last few years.

Overall, Colonial Medical has an adequate selection of mobility scooters, and we like the idea of making such a major purchase from a company that has proven itself as reputable for over 30 years.

And, of course, you'll need to keep in mind the needs of the person who will be using the mobility scooter; factors like size, ability to use one or both hands, and other personal characteristics can impact which scooters are a good match.

Because so many of the industry's top retailers of mobility scooters have online stores, you can easily find the right one without even leaving home. For people with challenges getting around, this is a huge plus. As you consider which store to use for your scooter investment, here are several factors to bear in mind:

  • Price. What will you spend to buy your scooter from this retailer? Will you pay for shipping/delivery? Are there any discounts available that can make your purchase more affordable?
  • Selection. How many scooters does the company carry? Are they all available, or are there models that are regularly out of stock? Do they have a variety of styles and features to choose from?
  • Policies. Does the retailer offer a satisfaction guarantee, return policy, or warranty coverage? If you get a warranty, will you have to bring the scooter to a repair facility for service, or can they send someone to you?
  • Reputation. What do customers have to say about their experience with the business? Is it rated and/or accredited by the BBB?
  • TopConsumerReviews.com has reviewed and ranked the best Mobility Scooter stores available today. We hope these reviews help you find the right mobility scooter to maintain your active, healthy lifestyle!
