Hoveround vs Mobility Ready

Best Mobility Scooter Stores

Who has the best Mobility Scooters? For those with difficulties getting around at home or in public, mobility scooters are the most popular way of helping them stay active and engaged in life. From simplifying shopping trips to making it possible to get safely from one room to another, mobility scooters make it possible to stay independent even when users are managing difficult health conditions that affect their mobility.

When deciding which mobility scooter is right for you or for a loved one, the first consideration is what it will be used for. For example, the type of scooter you'd buy for someone who will use it primarily indoors is vastly different from what would be necessary for long trips outside. Another factor to consider is weight and portability: will you need to be able to lift it into a van or other vehicle for transport?

Hoveround

Cost:

From $799 to $3,949

Hoveround has been a well-known name in the mobility industry for more than 25 years. Their products include power wheelchairs, scooters, and stair lifts, all sold direct to consumers from their headquarters in Florida.

Not sure what product is the best fit? You can answer a brief survey that will guide you to the mobility solution that might work best. Or, if you already know that you want a scooter, you'll find them under the Mobility Solutions heading. Hoveround carries a total of 12 scooters, 3- and 4-wheel options in travel and heavy-duty styles. The site doesn't give you a way to sort through the scooters by features, so you'll need to browse awhile to find out more about each model.

When you've selected a scooter that interests you, you'll find very detailed information - including downloadable owner's manuals and spec sheets. Unlike some of Hoveround's competitors, they don't seem to give you options for customizing their mobility scooters' seat width/height, color, and so on.

If you are getting your Hoveround scooter through Medicare or private insurance, you'll get free delivery and in-home training by Hoveround employees - known as White Glove Delivery. On the other hand, if you're paying privately, you'll still get standard shipping for no extra charge, but you'll need to pay for the White Glove Delivery if you want it.

Hoveround doesn't tell you what their return policy is for mobility scooters - if there is one. They only specify what to expect when buying two models of their power wheelchairs. You do get a 14-month "Peace of Mind Warranty" on their scooters - but again, good luck finding a description of what that entails.

Reviews on the business and their mobility scooters are very mixed. We found a lot of praise for how Hoveround helped customers choose the right product for their needs and navigate all of the paperwork necessary to get their scooter covered by Medicare. The company has an "A+" rating with the Better Business bureau, and you'll see lots of five-star Google reviews at the bottom of the Hoveround site.

But, we also found more than a few reviews that complained about the post-purchase experience - but you won't see those on the Hoveround site, because they only show the top comments. Looking at the actual Google reviews and other places, dozens of customers said that the batteries don't last nearly as long as expected. Others described having to wait weeks to get replacement parts, leaving them with no working scooter in the meanwhile. And, more than a few people said that they had to wait 30 minutes to an hour on hold in order to speak with someone in customer service.

Hoveround might be a good choice if you want a company that is knowledgeable in working with private insurance and Medicare to get your mobility scooter at little to no cost. But, you should expect it to be challenging to connect with this retailer if you need service after your purchase.

Mobility Ready

MOBILITY READY

Cost:

From $569 to $4,349

Mobility Ready is a small, third-party retailer of mobility scooters, power wheelchairs, lift chairs, and accessories. Their selection includes a wide range of brands, from familiar names like Shoprider and Pride to smaller manufacturers like RMB and Green Bike USA.

Although you can sort through their inventory by price, name, and date added, the easiest way to start is by choosing what type of mobility scooter you need. Using the links on the left side of the page, you can go directly to 3- or 4-wheel models, styles that fold, or heavy-duty mobility scooters.

When you've selected a scooter, you'll see at a glance what customization options are available - from colors, to throttle side, even any free extras like cup holders. Shipping is free within the continental US, and most scooters have an expected delivery timeframe of 3-10 business days.

Because Mobility Ready ships scooters directly from the manufacturer, there are limits to what you can expect once you've received your order. Here are some of the more interesting ones:

  • "Shipping damage is a common thing with all shipping carriers. We will not issue refunds if boxes are refused because of box damage."
  • "We do not issue refunds for cosmetic blemishes from shipping. We will ship out replacement parts and paint. Replacement parks orders typically take between 1-3 weeks to fulfill."
  • Mobility Ready doesn't offer its own satisfaction guarantee. Instead they rely on the "Norton Shopping Guarantee" - where you'd have to make a claim to Norton within 30 days of the date you purchased your mobility scooter.
  • All warranties are strictly those offered by the manufacturer, so you'll need to read each brand's terms and conditions to know what coverage you'll get. This also applies to returns; despite advertising the "Best Return Policy" as a reason for shopping with them, Mobility Ready doesn't actually offer anything exceptional.

At the time of our review, we didn't find a listing for Mobility Ready with the Better Business Bureau. Customer comments around the web were similarly hard to find: just handful on the retailer's website itself and a handful of others in various places. Most of those were positive, but with a purchase as large as a mobility scooter, most customers want to know that a store has a strong reputation for customer service before and after the order is delivered.

For that reason, along with the limits we described above, Mobility Ready does not earn a top ranking among scooter stores. We hope to see more from them in the future, but for the time being, we can only give them two stars.

And, of course, you'll need to keep in mind the needs of the person who will be using the mobility scooter; factors like size, ability to use one or both hands, and other personal characteristics can impact which scooters are a good match.

Because so many of the industry's top retailers of mobility scooters have online stores, you can easily find the right one without even leaving home. For people with challenges getting around, this is a huge plus. As you consider which store to use for your scooter investment, here are several factors to bear in mind:

  • Price. What will you spend to buy your scooter from this retailer? Will you pay for shipping/delivery? Are there any discounts available that can make your purchase more affordable?
  • Selection. How many scooters does the company carry? Are they all available, or are there models that are regularly out of stock? Do they have a variety of styles and features to choose from?
  • Policies. Does the retailer offer a satisfaction guarantee, return policy, or warranty coverage? If you get a warranty, will you have to bring the scooter to a repair facility for service, or can they send someone to you?
  • Reputation. What do customers have to say about their experience with the business? Is it rated and/or accredited by the BBB?
  • TopConsumerReviews.com has reviewed and ranked the best Mobility Scooter stores available today. We hope these reviews help you find the right mobility scooter to maintain your active, healthy lifestyle!
