Who has the best personal checks? Despite the tendency to pay for many things digitally, personal checks are still a part of today's financial transactions. From babysitters who aren't old enough to accept payment via PayPal to merchants who give discounts for paying by check, the number of places that personal checks come in handy has stayed consistent over the years.

Most people are also aware that buying personal checks directly from the bank or credit union is not only boring but also more expensive. If you want personal checks that reflect your personal style - featuring your favorite sports team, your alma mater, or even customized with photos of your pet or grandkids - or you simply want to save money, getting your checks from a reputable online company is the way to go.

Cost:

Starting at $6.46 for 150 singles and $7.46 for 150 duplicates

Walmart has it all - even when it comes to personal checks. But, just like you might get overwhelmed by shopping at their brick-and-mortar stores, you could be initially overwhelmed when navigating the Walmart Checks site.

Finding the personal checks you want at Walmart is a little less intuitive than some of the companies we reviewed. On the main page, you can see several categories, not listed in any particular order: Feminine Design, Cause-Related, Dog Breed, and Character Checks were a few of the possibilities. Once you've selected a category, you can scroll through to see the available options - but again, there wasn't an easy way to sort them (such as alphabetically, by popularity, and so on).

It may be worth it to you to slog through the search process, though: Walmart's "everyday low prices" apply to their designer checks very nicely. Whether you're selecting Marvel Avengers, Disney Princesses, or even supporting the San Diego Zoo, you'll pay an incredibly low $7.46 for 150 single checks or $8.46 for 150 duplicates. No other site we found could even come close to those prices.

Walmart is one of a handful of personal check providers that allows you to upload images to truly personalize your order. There are two options: Photo Checks and Paper People Checks. For Photo Checks, you can upload one image; 150 single checks sells for $15.46, and 150 duplicates for $17.46. With the Paper People option, instead of uploading a photo, you'll select from several stick figure characters that you'd like to add (up to a total of 5); these include Mom lady, Gym lady, Work man, Chef man, and so forth. These sell for slightly more: $18.46 for a pack of 100 singles or $24.96 for 100 duplicates.

Oddly, Walmart might not include a transaction register with your personal checks. We found mention of one being included with check orders, but it wasn't consistent across the site. If you keep track of your checking account manually (instead of using software or online sites like Mint), you may want to add a register to your order for $3.46.

Shipping costs for personal checks from Walmart are average: free non-trackable mail, trackable for $6.25, and second-day or overnight for an extra charge. There are no processing fees with your order, putting Walmart slightly above some of their competitors.

At the end of the day, Walmart is an excellent choice for affordable personal checks in a nice variety of designs. You just may need to put in a little extra work to find what you want, but the savings makes it well worth your time.

Cost:

Starting at $3.99 for 25 singles and $5.99 for 25 duplicates

Checks in the Mail is another personal check company owned by Harland Clarke. You'll find many of the same offerings as Checks Superstore for that reason - and that also means that you'll be buying from a company with a reputable history spanning many decades.

When you first visit the Checks in the Mail site, you may get a pop-up offering exclusive offers if you sign up for their newsletter. That pop-up also featured a coupon code offering a discounted price of $5.49 per box of personal checks; it looked like that code could be used even if we didn't sign up with our email address. And, while we browsed the site, we got another offer to save 20%; it came with a 30-minute window for use, but the code was applied automatically and showed up at the top of the page.

You'll find a selection of over 250 designs on the checks in the Mail site. Categories include Dog Breeds, Characters, Patterns, and Classic designs, among others.

The pricing structure with this company also mirrors their sister site's: default pricing looks appealing, starting at $3.99 and $5.99, but that only represents a single pad of personal checks. If you want a traditional full box, expect to pay at least $18.99 for 100 single checks and $22.99 for duplicates.

Checks in the Mail is more expensive than Checks Superstore when it comes to shipping and processing fees - effectively eliminating any savings you might get from lower-priced personal checks. On an order of a single pad of basic Green Safety Checks, our processing fee was $3.55. Non-trackable shipping was free, as it is with most companies selling personal checks, but the lowest trackable option was $8.95.

You'll find a decent selection of personal checks at Checks in the Mail, but their pricing is just average. You'll definitely want to keep an eye on any offers for discounts that pop up as you browse the site if you choose this company for your personal checks.

Continued from above

These personal check companies meet the same criteria as your own bank follows, to ensure that your transactions are accepted and that your checks are printed accurately.

As you decide which company to use for your next order of personal checks, there are several things to keep in mind. You should consider the following factors:

  • Cost. How much will you spend to get the checks you want, in terms of style, design, fonts, and features (such as duplicate checks that create a carbon copy of each check you write)? Are there any money-saving perks like discounts on larger orders or free shipping?
  • Variety. Does the check company offer a broad selection of personal checks?
  • Reputation. What do other customers have to say about their experience with the personal check company? Does the business have a rating from the Better Business Bureau?
