A large number of companies offer pet insurance to Florida residents. Some may wonder if such coverage is worth the monthly premium and think that it is likely to be a waste of money.
Those individuals should consider how the average cost of veterinary procedures has skyrocketed in recent years, as advances in medicine have allowed for more life-saving treatments to prolong pets' lives. Even the propensity for pet owners to choose "designer" breeds has resulted in medical conditions that may not have existed previously, at least not in the amounts currently being observed. Intervertebral disc disease, commonly seen in dachshunds, beagles, and Pekingese, can cost more than $3,000 to treat; both dogs and cats can require surgery to remove foreign objects from their gastrointestinal tracts, which can cost nearly $2,000 to correct a problem that may even have been preventable.
While pet insurance doesn't typically cover 100% of costs, but rather pays out a percentage of each bill, it can often mean the difference between saving a pet's life and having to choose to put it to sleep so as to not go into significant debt to pay for medical treatment. Floridians should compare the policies of the pet insurance companies they are considering, because plans can vary widely in terms of deductibles, premiums, and exclusions. They should also know that many policies do exclude pre-existing conditions, hereditary diseases, and even certain breeds (such as chow chows and Lhasa Apsos). Finally, it is important to decide which kind of coverage will best meet their pets' needs, from catastrophic (injury/illness) only to comprehensive plans that also include routine wellness visits, vaccinations, and preventative tests.
Regardless of the plan selected, Florida pet owners can benefit from pet insurance that will allow them to focus on keeping Fido or Fifi well and happy, without having to worry about their bank accounts.
