Georgia pet owners know what a wonderful addition a dog or cat can be to a family: companionship, exercise, protection, and joy are just a few of the benefits of having a pet. However, pets can also come with their fair share of expenses. Not only do owners have to keep their furry friends well-fed, exercised, and entertained, but they also have to consider veterinary expenses both large and small.
Unfortunately, while advances in modern medicine have made it possible to keep pets alive longer, that progress has come at a price. While most pet owners understand that their four-legged family members will need routine care such as vaccinations and spaying/neutering, they are often unprepared for the expenses incurred when Fido eats a corn cob or Fifi swallows a ribbon, or when cancer is diagnosed out of the blue. The cost of such treatments can easily reach into the thousands, leaving some with the difficult decision to either go into debt or put a beloved pet to sleep.
Pet insurance can make it easier for residents of Georgia to get their pets the treatment they need without breaking the bank. While plans vary, most pet insurance plans cover catastrophic illness and injury, and for an additional premium many companies will include coverage of routine immunizations and other preventative care. It is important to research any pet insurance coverage to avoid surprises; these plans do not follow the same regulations as human medical insurance, and thus they can exclude pre-existing conditions, hereditary diseases, older pets, and even specific breeds (e.g. chow chows, pit bulls, and Rottweilers). Also, deductibles, annual and lifetime payout limits, and payout amounts (i.e. percentage of cost vs. "usual, customary, and reasonable") can all vary across companies.
However, for most Georgia pet owners, pet insurance is the best way to make sure that their dogs and cats can get the treatments they might need in the future at a price they can afford.
