Pet Insurance in Illinois

Illinois MapMore than half of all Illinois households own at least one pet, according to a recent study of more than 50,000 households in the United States. Pets can offer companionship, love, and even security to their owners; pet insurance is one way that those owners can give back to their furry family members by making sure that any needed treatments or surgeries are affordable.

Without pet insurance, some people are forced to choose between going into debt to pay for veterinary care or having a beloved pet euthanized. This is easy to understand when looking at the average costs for common surgeries and treatment: for a torn ACL or cartilage in a dog, the average bill is more than $2,500, while bladder stones in a cat cost approximately $980 to remove. Cancer is also common in both cats and dogs, and some treatments reach nearly $10,000.

Pet insurance is available from a number of companies in Illinois, though the breadth of coverage varies widely. Customers may wish to purchase catastrophic coverage only, to help pay the bills in the event of an illness such as cancer or an accidental injury. On the other hand, some Illinois pet owners prefer more comprehensive pet insurance, that not only includes catastrophic coverage but also more routine veterinary care such as spaying and neutering, vaccinations, and yearly checkups. In either case, it is important to understand that pet insurance is different from human health care insurance in significant ways; pet policies can exclude animals with pre-existing conditions, elderly pets, or even limit the coverage offered for specific breeds (e.g. Lhasa Apsos, chow chows, and pit bulls).
