Pet Insurance in Indiana

Indiana MapIndiana residents love their pets; the state even ranks ninth in the nation with respect to cat ownership, with more than 34% of households in the state owning at least one. However, rising costs of veterinary care are affecting all pet owners in the state.

While advances in modern medicine have made it possible to give pets life-saving surgery and other treatments, that progress has come at a price. For example, the ninth most common surgery for dogs - to treat cancer of the liver - has an average bill of $8,500. In cats, even something as seemingly simple as a tooth extraction can cost more than $900. Unfortunately, for some pet owners, unexpected veterinary bills can result in the difficult decision to humanely euthanize a pet rather than go into debt to pay for the treatment.

On the other hand, pet insurance is one way for Indiana pet owners to get the care their pets need without having to be stressed out about their finances. A variety of plans exist to cover veterinary expenses, from catastrophic coverage only (i.e. illness and/or accident) to comprehensive packages that include annual checkups and tests, vaccinations, and other preventative care. Pet insurance plans can also differ in terms of deductibles and copayments, annual and lifetime coverage limits, and how payments are determined (e.g. by a percentage of the bill vs. "usual, reasonable, and customary" amounts), so people in Indiana should be sure to compare a number of policies to find the one that best meets their needs.

Finally, it is important to note that pet insurance policies are not subject to the same rules that apply to human health care policies, so certain pre-existing conditions are not required to be covered (though some plans may cover them anyway). There are also a few dog breeds that may only be eligible for limited coverage, if any.
