Pet insurance policies run the gamut from bare-bones catastrophic coverage (in the event of illness or accidental injury) to comprehensive plans that include spaying and neutering, vaccinations, and other routine preventative care. Kansans shopping for pet insurance should be sure to compare multiple policies, taking note of any deductibles, copayments, or annual coverage limits. Also, many plans have specific exclusions for pre-existing or hereditary conditions, for elderly pets, or have limited coverage for certain breeds (e.g. Rottweilers, pit bulls, Lhasa Apsos, and chow chows). It is also important to be aware of how payment amounts are determined; some policies choose to cover only "reasonable and customary" fees that may be considerably less than those actually charged by a veterinarian, so policies that pay a percentage of any fees incurred might be preferable for most customers.

Regardless of the type of policy chosen, pet insurance can help make it unnecessary to go into debt for life-saving surgery or treatment, thus avoiding the painful decision to have a beloved pet humanely euthanized solely because treatment was not affordable. Given the high costs of certain common treatments, pet insurance is becoming more common in Kansas and elsewhere; even something as seemingly simple as a tooth extraction for a cat can cost nearly $1,000, and more complicated treatment plans for conditions like canine liver cancer typically result in a veterinarian bill of nearly $9,000. And, unfortunately, these conditions are not atypical; one report from a pet insurance company indicated as many as 1,600 claims in a year for feline tooth extraction alone.
