Pet Insurance in New York

New York MapVeterinary costs are on the rise in New York. Cancer, in its many varieties, is one of the most treatable illnesses a pet can have, but the price to perform the necessary surgery can put pet owners in a horrible dilemma: pay hundreds or thousands of dollars to help Rover get better and possibly go into debt to do so, or have him humanely put to sleep because they can't afford the veterinarian's bill?

This is no exaggeration. In a recent study of the most common surgical claims for dogs, cancer took four of the top ten results, from cancer of the eyelid ($717.12) to cancer of the liver ($8,539.41). When the same study was conducted with respect to cats, cancer held half of the top ten surgical procedures, with cancer of the liver at $778.90 on the low end and removal of a malignant skin mass on the higher end at $1507.96. These costs are only average, as prices can vary widely depending on the particular veterinarian and clinic as well as the region of the state.

Pet insurance is one of the most common ways for New Yorkers to prevent being deeply affected by such high costs for veterinary care. Most policies pay for a predetermined percentage of any covered procedures or treatments; it is up to individual customers to choose a policy that offers the extent of coverage they desire, whether that is a basic plan limited to strictly catastrophic events and illnesses, or a wider policy that includes illnesses, accidents, and routine preventative care (e.g. vaccinations, tests, spaying or neutering).

Regardless of the type of plan chosen, pet insurance can give New York pet owners additional peace of mind knowing that their beloved animal companions can get the care they need now and for many years in the future.
